Not to get picky, but nobody won the Civil War. The so-called "winners" suffered staggering casualties, including the president. It was hugely expensive. And in the years since, we've been burdened by the constant barrage of backwards ideas and attitudes that continue to emanate from the confederate states. We would have been better off if we'd celebrated when they withdrew. A good old cotton boycott and a blockade would have ended slavery much more effectively than war. Plus, for more than a century, the federal government has been dumping money on those deadbeats at much higher rates than the miniscule taxes they pay.
