That's terrible. Bain is a bane. They got the name right even if with wonky spelling.

Although this Rolling Stone piece by Matt Taibi is 3 years old, it's worth a re-read. And for those who missed it, you'll want to read it.

Yes to this! Much animation work gets outsourced to South Korea. The South Koreans then outsource to North Korea, where so many people are starving (literally, not figuratively).

I still don't think it can be legal. A customer not paying is theft. Employees aren't responsible for what criminals do. I was robbed at gun point at an art gallery in DC. The robber pretended to be a legit customer, asking about the art. Next thing I knew was he got very very close to me and pulled a pistol out of his waistband (for reals) and told me to go to the register and give him all the cash. He even wanted the pennies! Anyway, he made off with about $250. The gallery owner/artist is very cheap and refused to install security cameras. I called the police but I didn't have any way to prove the business had been robbed. Anyway, here and in every state I've lived in retailers, including restaurants, cannot make their employees pay for customers who robbed, descrepency in cash out/accounts rcv, or damaged merchandise. If an employee is stealing, or negligent the employer can fire them of course. If they want to he money, they have to press charges and go through the legal system. I never realized how fucked up the laws were in rtws.

Not an option, apparently, is accepting the fact that Wal-Mart shares are actually worth 26% less.

By the time I re-entered the practically-nonexistent-for-people-of-my-age-and-skillset job market, nearly all the work for people like me was gone. I've been temping whenever I can get a shift (preferably 2nd or 3rd, but I'm now desperate enough to work days). All those big word processing departments where I used to find work? Gone! The WP is outsourced to Chennai. I do get far-too-occasional work proofreading legal or financial documents, but it's not enough. To top it all off, the work pays less -- not in adjusted dollars, but in actual dollars -- than it did in the 1980s.

Whole Foods is useful for two things (for me, anyway): raw sprouted almond butter and their cafe spaces, where I go to drink overpriced tea when I have to meet someone (I live in a four-flights-up tenement). I have local, independent health food stores at which to buy my bulk items. Fortunately, I belong to a pseudo-CSA where I get about ten pounds of organic produce for $10 from June to November. If not for that, I'd probably have to make do with one meal a day. Despite my dire circumstances, I volunteer to help keep the food bag program working.

I'm glad I've never spent a cent in Toys-R-Us. They deserve nothing from me but scorn.

didn't Banksy make a cartoon statement about this as one of the opening couch gags for the Simpsons?

I like the square ones with the stainless steel containers. I bought mine on eBay at least 12 years ago. Still works as perfectly as ever (although I've never had the use of the top speed).

at the time, i needed the job, and couldn't really complain. not many opportunities for someone recovering from a ruptured disc. it may have been illegal, but if an employer has fewer than a certain number of employees, i think it is 15, they are exempt from many of the state regulations. here you can be fired for anything, and the only recourse is to file for unemployment, and hope they rule in your favor. it used to be a 6 week waiting period for being fired with cause. and if you quit a job, no unemployment for you.
