The reigning monarch of the British Commonwealth is pictured on the Canadian one dollar coin.

On the reverse side is a loon in flight. The coin is therefore called the 'loonie'

Perhaps the Canadians could strike a limited edition set of loonies with donnie's face on it.

Just for the lulz.

Most groups of birds, but not all, are called flocks. I think, given our current administration, that a group of loons be called a cabinet.

What do you call two or three crows hanging around?

Attempted murder

Martini Glambassador's avatar

A group of loons is called a raft. A group of administration officials is called a grift.

TIL.

Menotsure's avatar

Well, I'm pretty sure at least one cabinet member can swallow a whole live fish.

Oh, two loons. A twoonie.

There's nothing more otherworldly and comforting than the haunting sound of a loon calling across a lake into the starry night in the Great North.

My family used to spend a couple of summer weekends at our friend's house on Great East Lake (one of the seven lakes in the NH Seven Lakes Region). The lake was clear as crystal, and a loon family lived there in the summer. The sound of the loons was so appealing to me that I bought a loon stuffie that had the call so I could hear the sound at home.

I love loons. They are amazing birds. They always rekindle memories of home. The closest I ever got to one in the wild was years ago when I was a camp counselor I was teaching canoe rescue on one of the lakes in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. We had just swamped a canoe and another was paddling over to do the rescue. I was in the water with the swamped boat and up pops a loon from a dive about two feet away from me. We stared at each other for about a minute. I will never forget its cool red eyes and how big it was. Then it just dove under the water again and was gone. One of my best Northwoods experiences ever!

You know, I hope they don’t drown their less-healthy chick like coots do.

I didn't see any mention of that in what I read.

Mr S and I saw some nature show about coots back in the day, we were horrified! We always thought they were so cute and then…the murders began.

Loons would be our winter guests in the southern Chesapeake back when we had boat there. They, like dolphins, also “herd” baitfish by blowing bubbles around them. I wonder if they learned that trick from the dolphies?

From the maxing link: Discussing the trend on Fox News’ “The Five,” co-host Jesse Watters said, “I’m anti-cologne.” He recommended a simple pre-date shower with bar soap and shampoo.

Jesse also recommends trapping your romantic interest by letting the air out of her tires. But at least he smelled nice.

From Sean Duffy TAB: "You know the stop/start button on your car? I hate that thing. Thank you Lee Zeldin! He's gotten rid of it and the first cars without the stop/start button are rolling off the line."

Wait, what? Why do you hate a pushbutton? Is it too hard for you to understand?

(digs further into the issue)

Oh, apparently pushbuttons ARE too hard for Real World Duffman, because he's confused a button with the AUTOSTOP/START function of modern cars.

In fact, the feature is not in any way "gotten rid of." Zeldin's EPA simply discontinued the tax credit to auto manufacturers when they make the function "on" by default.

"Underwater in the polls ahead of the nation's October elections, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to Israel's popular Channel 14 Sunday night with a pitch to voters.

“I’ve been against Iran for almost 40 years… it took a long time to bring the United States to its senses,” Netanyahu said in Hebrew, according to Zeteo’s Prem Thakker.

“[I’ve had] close to 1,000 hours on American television with the ability to influence the United States — with the intimate knowledge of all its leaders, both those who support us and those who don’t support us — the ability to navigate this field, through it.”

“The gall. In English, Netanyahu lavishes praise on U.S. leaders. In Hebrew, he boasts of how he manipulated them,” Thakker wrote in a report published in Zeteo Tuesday.

“Netanyahu explicitly cites how the U.S. media has served as a compliant springboard, a vessel for his influence operation on, if not the populace, at least the consultants and members of Congress who engage with cable news more than their actual constituents.”

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for the baby loon! Oh how I miss the call of the loon early in a still morning between early morning nautical daylight and sunrise, when the mist is rising off the water and the flies are on the water and the bass and trout are making little wavelets as they rise to take the flies, and the loons take the fish. (The real circle of life.) This is the best time to bait a hook and watch your bobber till it dips and you feel the tug and know you have a fish on, before there is a splash and the slick feel of the fish on your hand as you disengage it from the hook and drop it in bucket. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The call of the loon is the call of the wild.
