I have seen lots of altar girls at the local Catholic churches in the past 8 years - I was invited to two First Communions and a Confirmation and it was one of the first things I noticed. I wanted to be an altar girl when I was about 6, but was promptly told that I couldn't because I didn't have a penis, which is just about the exact moment when I decided the Catholic Church was full of shit, although I didn't think of it in those terms at age 6. But knowing what I know know about how some priests abuse children, I'm glad I wasn't allowed to be one.
Religion is the seat of great power all over the world, and has been for thousands of years ... so it's no surprise that most religions exclude women from leadership, because men like to have all the power, and they seem to particularly enjoy using it to order women and children around, and to justify their personal priorities.
The thing that really interested me as a child was that the priests all dressed in long robes, like women in fancy dress, and some of those robes were very ornate. This struck me as peculiar at the time. And then I noticed that the nuns were all dressed in shapeless robes that did as much as possible to hide their femininity. Somewhere around age 12 I thought "These men hate women because women have something they want but can't have, so they take it away from women and then dress up like women." This thought was so confusing that I decided to stop thinking about it.
