There's a lot of people out there who don't love New Pope. (Yes, 17 years on or whatever, he will always be New Pope to us.) There's the Mafia, ISIS, Rick Santorum ... But say somebody actually tries to whack him, or homicide-bomb him, or drown him in the frothy mixture of feces and lubricant that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex?
Yeah, I don't expect him to be able to right all the wrongs of the past 1500 years or so with a few nice words, and I pretty much agree with you the Church is on at least some level a big corrupt money grabbing machine. Was there some fund-raising cynicism in his selection? Eh, why not? No doubt that Ratzi character was a PR disaster.
I get all that; the bottom line for me is NP is actively inviting his followers, not just those wealthy Americans, to be better Xtians. More Christlike. I've seen anecdotal difference already with my own eyes. He's preaching tolerance and people are lapping it up. They wanted permission to be tolerant, too. Not a bad thing.
And remember: tithing is a month-by-month phenomenon. He can lose those rich American Catholics just as fast as he got them back.
Yes he deserves credit for many things, including how some people don't have food or clothing or medical care while others piss away money on 40,000-SF homes and 300--foot yachts. I think New Pope is wonderful, but I'm sticking with the Episcopalians. They too have great music (well, many of them do), fine liturgy (great prayer book tradition), and good schools--but also lady priests, birth control, and open arms for the gays. Also, plenty of pew space for skeptics.
