I still don’t understand how more Republican women aren’t outraged by Buttcheek. He stood on the stage at a college graduation and told the women there “yeah, go grab a husband and get in the kitchen, you Jezebels.”

When I graduated college, our commencement speaker was a state legislator here in Louisiana—so Republican—and his speech was not memorable at all, but it also didn’t attract the scorn of intelligent people. Or nuns.

And the Benedectine nuns? They are apparently Catholic-pissed.

OMG shit got real

"Judge Merchan admonishes Costello: 'Are you staring me down?'

Judge Juan Merchan told the jury to step out of the courtroom.

“I want to discuss proper decorum in my courtroom,” Merchan said, addressing the witness Robert Costello.

So when they’re a witness on the stand and you don’t like my ruling, you don’t say ‘jeez,’ and you don’t say ‘strike it.’ Because I’m the only one who can strike ... You don’t roll your eyes, do you understand that? Do you understand that? Are you staring me down right now?

“Clear the courtroom please,” Merchan said."

The courtroom was cleared after Justice Juan Merchan became angry at the witness for rolling his eyes and giving him a side-eye glance.

Merchan sent the jury out, then turned to the witness, lawyer Robert Costello and said: “I’d like to discuss proper decorum in my courtroom. When there’s a witness on the stand, if you don’t like my ruling, you don’t say, ‘Geez,’ and then you don’t say strike it, because I’m the only one who does that. If you don’t like my ruling, you don’t give me side-eye. You understand that?”

Costello said yes.

Then the judge said, “Are you staring me down? Clear the courtroom.”

“You want me to answer the question?” Costello replied.

Merchan said, “Remain quiet.”

Then the video feed stopped.

I keep thinking of a film where all of th erst of us here could tarvel to where uyou are and break you out (we would bring a moving van, oto be sure. And so they wqould nopt be able to track you down we would keep transferring you feom house to houe when things get hoty.

The reason for the makeup is because I'm old now and have age spots on my face, whereas I used to have a lovely, smooth complexion and never needed much makeup. I used to look 10 years younger than my age, but now I look my age, and it annoys me, so whenever I have to go to any kind of formal or professional event, I use foundation to even out my skin tone.

I am fucking pissed off too. Really angry. Yes, they have laws for "swift trials" but like most things in the criminal justice system, nobody pays any attention to them. One guy I read about was in jail for 7 years awaiting trial, and was then acquitted. I think he's suing. I certainly hope so.

Yes, we could have our own version of the Underground Railroad! What a great idea! Except I've got this cat, and she has to go with me. She wouldn't like that ... she's never once left my house in 15 years except to go to the vet, and she's a real scaredy-cat.

Also, I depend on Social Security and a U of Missouri pension, and all they have to do is freeze my bank account and I'm toast, with nothing to live on.

Expand full comment
DDB9000's avatar

I can understand that. i'm just a shlub - I'm overweight and for the most part I don't shave, at least unitl the white hairs show up! I was in NYC yesterday to see a friend of mine perform, and initally though I'd shave, but then I figured ''why scar my face - he won't care!''. Plus I always wear a mask when I'm out in public.

Fortuantely I have never been in trouble, but altely I have considered putting up a yard sign againt the Republican candidate for state assembly, who actully HAS a criminal past.

The only thing stopping me is that the city police and the local sherriff's association are both supporting him. As it is, a couple of months ago, a shooting occurred across the street where someone shot from a car and missed.

I had to read in the news about spent cartridges landing on MY LAWN! So I don't think I can trust the local police at all.

I like your idea of an Underground Railroad. We actually have an AME Zion church in town that was part of that and MLK Jr. actually visited it. Guess we could stassh you there...

I also am on SS and also have a state peneions, and ther way they are set up, I get money on the 4TH Wednesday and the last business day of the moth. This month that makes it th 22nd and 31st!

Screws up my paying bills royally!

In any case I am nowhere near as bad off, but I will say one thing, if Trump somehow wins, I think we will have to start Operation Save The Queen at Wonkette!

Sorry for late reply - my internet went dead just as I finished

Expand full comment
Queen Méabh's avatar

Whoever came up with the idea of changing Social Security payments from the 2nd of each month to the Wednesday after the week in which you have your birthday was a fucking idiot. My date varies from the 8th to the 14th. All of my bills come due on the 1st, because that's how I set them up when I moved into this house 15 years ago, so this variable timing really sucks. It was a TERRIBLE IDEA!!

I was just thinking about how the election is in November and my trial is in December, so if Trump wins I will already be in a horrible terrible no-good mood, and then have to sit through a week of trial. I'm going to need a lot of Valium.

The judge reset the bond revocation hearing for May 28. She obviously figured out that it wasn't urgent because it was complete nonsense, otherwise she would have set it sooner. I don't know if I will go to the hearing or not. If I don't have to, I won't, because it's a 6-hour round trip.

Of course the AG could simply withdraw her motion, but they never do that, not ever. They never admit they made a mistake.

I wish I had a simple one. I think part of it is paid media, a lot of it is grass roots communications and outreach, though these are slow and cumbersome and very hard to drive. Some of it too is manipulating the media the way Republicans have learned to (play the refs, force a message through even where the media wants to go in another direction in an interview, leverage "access" for what they must report) and also using alternative media (like Biden interviewing with Stern).

In the long run, we really need a liberal version of Fox News.
