This reminds me of that feel good story of the 90 year old who was still working. It's meant to make us feel good, people helping out and what not. But in the back of my head I cannot help but think to myself that the richest nation in the world has a shortage at its food banks.
Well, this afternoon, as soon as my department meeting is over, I am heading out on my 5 day camping trip. Looks like I am getting there just in time for highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s, yes! A cold front moves in on Monday, but by then I'll be back home.
I got my first night of sleep last night since learning the news about my friend having cancer. We got to talk for about an hour Sunday night. It's awfully hard to smile when the world might lose one of the all time greats.

People post their entire lives on the internet. What they eat, where they shop, every thought and dream, on accounts tied to their schools, workplaces, home addresses even. And then they get all shocked that the companies they are willingly feeding are selling that data.
Sure, but that's not my point, and that's been going on for a while. Posting everything in the hope that other real people see it isn't smart, but I can understand wanting attention.
I'm more saddened by people who talk to 'AI' like it actually listens, because they don't just have different priorities than I do, they fundamentally misunderstand reality.
I think it's a fundamental feature of our make-up, inhered through evolution. It's the same anthropomorphic tendency to personalize various objects ("Goddam car why can't you stop fucking with me and just start?!"). And when you're talking about a program specifically designed to emulate human language, well, it doesn't seem all that surprising.
The answer to both is: they have no friends, don't have the social skills to make friends, and the AI strokes their wee peens to make them feel better.
Some of these chatbots are just an extension of the bubble these people live in.

A private company suspended the account of a private citizen. A private citizen who clearly has no idea what the Constitution says and how the First Amendment works.
