Well, retirees are old and Trump rallies and the Rs are full of white hair. Roger Ailes wanted to own white male demographic of 50-dead and I'm afraid he succeeded. Old people generally have more reactionary viewpoints but Fox News really magnifies that divide I believe. As for younger people I have no answer unless the start attending the wretched Southern Baptist Convention variety church. The pastor shouts hell fire and damnation plus the virtues of Trump/Rs. God save the poor soul who dares question the pastor as he/she will be shouted down and if one persists in such heresy will be asked to leave the church. Best theory I can come up with off the top of my head.

Without a doubt, the abrupt switch in party affiliation immediately following the Civil Rights Act passage confirms the primary beliefs of the native southerners.

There is one huge factor that is never addressed. The population of the south has more than doubled since the 60's because air conditioning has made the uncomfortable southern climate palatable to Yankee emigres, both retirees and many others. That these new southerners support the GOP is irrefutable. The question is why?

It's that century of blind hatred voting that gets me. What can 1864 really mean to conditions in the 1950-60s? How brain dead are these multiple generations not to even look at the other side. I have no love lost for the Rs but surely some would have been better candidates. They would still be voting that way were it not for LBJ. And I do appreciate your comments.

The Civil Rights Act was 100% responsible for the South switching from Dem to Republican, just as Abe Lincoln was the reason why the south rejected the Republicans for a century.

I did not mean to imply that all of Trump's base came from the South. There are plenty of bitter racists everywhere even in liberal Massachusetts. Most western states have been Republican strongholds long before Trump. I was just pointing out that it was a huge tectonic shift to have the entire South suddenly switch sides and to point out the nature of the electorate there. They're still fighting the "War of Northern Aggression" and other revisionist battles.

That theory is accurate for the south, but there are at least 17 Red Hat states that were not in the CSA. It is a component of Trump's success, and undoubtedly racism is a huge factor in his magnetic draw, but there has got to be more. Otherwise, George Wallace would have replicated Trump's vote totals.

By the way, yellow dog democrat has been in my working vocabulary for at least three decades.

EdR These people are descended from the old Solid South which voted a straight Democratic ticket for a century following the Civil War so great was their hatred of president Lincoln and his party. Lee Atwater and Nixon swarfed these vile retards into the Republican Party via the Southern Strategy. It's no wonder these people are loathsome racists, etc. and woefully ignorant, their ancestors were still voting against Lincoln a CENTURY after his death. In the Dallas area and much of the South they were called yellow dog Democrats as they would sooner vote for a yellow dog than a Republican. Now they're yellow dog Republicans. They couldn't abide abide black people being afforded civil rights by LBJ in 1964-5. This set the stage for the Southern Strategy.

Ya know, in my home state of Minnesota in the early '70s, the Republicans officially renamed themselves to Independent Republicans, to distance themselves from Nixon. Now they argue about who gives Commissar Trumpski the best tongue bath.

WTF? Just, WTF?

As one who suffered the embarrassment of living in a state that granted T-Paw eight years in the governor's mansion, I will never tire of watching him suck hot sick through his stupid weasel face.
