It’s so odd that TN is more liberal in the west and gets more conservative as you go east now. It was exactly the opposite during the Civil War—more Confederate in the west and more Union support as you got into the mountains. I-40 stopped just east of Chattanooga until like the 80s because some unreconstructed governor or state legislator vowed not to vote in state matching funds for “those damn Yankee sympathizers in East Tennessee.”
She has a lot of views I agree with, and she's in a red state. If she wins the general election, then I'd consider that a push to try running myself. But I feel like it's not worth it as a lefty Texan at the moment in a red town in a red county in a red state, even if money weren't an issue.
Consider, as well, that minorities tend to be suffering because those of us in the majority have engineered their suffering. So beyond basic humanitarian principles, that puts the moral obligation on us to try to make things right.
I was thinking of you today, Linda. We had our book club meeting on Zoom today, run by the principal, and it's nice because it's a small group and we can ask him questions. I felt better when he said he absolutely will not let the district open the school unless he is 100% sure of the air quality and that we can do it safely. So, he's saying the right things, anyway.
