I heard something on NPR this weekend about the Staples. Mom Staples was an incredible cook and Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson and many others would drop by their place when passing through and eat and sing and have a hell of a time. Since they weren't welcome to eat in whites-only places in those days it was nice to have a homecooked meal among friends.
The most awesome was filling in for Pavorotti on 5 minute's notice and singing Nessum Dorma (Although Chain of Fools is my favorite).
