Yes, I was there in 2010, and one thing I noticed was there was a palpable fear of Putin, and people definitely were careful. Us tourists were watched over very closely, and when our tour guide "lost" some of the group, she was visibly panicked and immediately called her superiors. The lost showed up late, and she was taken off our tour and not even replaced.
Not in 2010, they were working hard to be a tourist destination, in the major cities, anyway, like Moscow and St Petersburg. the rural areas were poor and a different story. the small villages were fascinating, like you had stepped back in time.
St Petersburg is beautiful especially during the "White Nights" which is when it stays light until the wee hours of the morning. The canals and the mansions along them are stunning.

Is losing our east coast, Texas. Vandenburg's Spaz Farce base, NASA, DC, NY, UN, Boston, etc worth seeing Twitler back in power? Romans 10:9

As far as I can tell (and not "Dunning-Kruegering" myself into being some sort of expert on east European political policy, I have't heard or seen anything that might be described as particuarly progressive. If anything, I've heard of regrssive ones... a "Ukranian" (language) only policy in public in the Russian speaking regions and some pro-business tax policies. What is it, you see as particularly "progressive"?
If I was the richest etc I'd have better things to do than thinking up things to say to annoy people with. Things that would be more fun for ME, first of all. Involving dogs and horses. And then, lots of beautiful clothes for ME! And then, all those things everybody wants to do, like FIX Everything. And I'd have a new network on radio and tv, that would be a cascade of facts. Delivered by some people who would be fun to watch and they'd present a common lie with a stupid or confused expression, and then the facts that show why it's a lie. And that would go on all day. No crap like the above unattractively ego-driven man who's bound to do pointless inhuman mischief bc he's bored.
Russia has become a shrike state, a den of uncultured vandals and robbers. Get back behind your borders, barbarians. Pay war reparations, form a decent government, and join the civilized world.
