I went and played at the video, just to hear the song, but as it happens the instrument in question is shown in the first few seconds. It's something I've never seen before -- definitely shaped like a woodblock, but painted red, and hollow. Can't say for sure if it's made of wood or metal. But I'm sure you're right, and the fact that it's hollow is why I mistook it for cowbell. Might have even been designed to sort of hybridize the two. Anyway I love that song.
