Kid’s parents are getting the runaround from one of the Big Four banks about reporting the fraud. The bank’s fraud claims line is claiming the minor child has to be the one claiming fraud, but everything online says minors cannot enter into a contract so the account holders are actually the parents anyway.(As Co-signers.) they’ve been to three different bank branches and heard three different conflicting versions of how to report this, but the fraud claims line is now claiming the minor child needs to report it and the parents cannot unless they have power of attorney? Which…the kid can’t sign any contract, the parents make their medical, educational, and legal decisions..so this is batshit, right? Like, the kid would make a statement but the parents are the decision makers for a non mature minor as long as they are the guardians? Halp! I haven’t gotten any help from Google because that just brings up articles on how to teach your kids to bank written by the banks themselves. None of us grown ups can figure this out. I mean, other than Canadian banks being generally part of the Evil Empire.(Just trust me on that one, Americans!)

Ah, that’s easy to answer. Because the bank’s fraud line KEPT HANGING UP. Three people visited three different bank branches and got three conflicting pieces of advice, and then two different people phoned four times apiece to report it and not ONE piece of advice matched. AND! AND! The bank hung up six of the 8 times. Not after providing advice either, just hung up, no warning.
In short, it’s like they all had zero clue what to do, and they panicked when they were called on it.
Reddit has a Canadian legal advice sub you could ask. There are usually Canadians in the main legal advice sub too. If they can't help they can direct you to someone who can.
Thanks for the advice! The family members finally gave up. I did get to Reddit at the Canadian financial advice subreddit and it was just people with similar miserable stories about Canadian banks sucking at helping people. The family decided not to pursue it. Not worth it. The subreddit’s consensus was that a person had better be prepared to spend 7-8 HOURS ON HOLD. And on eastern Canada time, and family is in the west, so basically get up at 5 am to be on hold ALL DAY. That far exceeded the value of lost funds versus the amount of wages lost to pursue it. Which…is the point for the bank. I don’t know if you’re Canuck or Yank or Other, but if you’re not Canuck, this right here, this is why Canadians hate Canadian banks and why when the US let Canadian banks in I said to Priince Albert “Are they insane?” Canadian banks learned to be evil centuries ago and the poor Yanks had no clue what they’d done to themselves.
