Corey Lewandowski Thinks Scared Disabled Lone Girl-Child Is HILARIOUS. Don't You?
They say compassion is a virtue, but I don't have the time
Rachel Maddow nearly broke down crying last night while trying to read a breaking AP story on three "tender age" shelters for infants and children taken from their parents. Instead of the usual cheerful/astonished-at-the-latest-stupidity toss to Lawrence O'Donnell, we saw this instead:
It wasn't so much the lede of the story that left her unable to keep reading -- that simply pointed out the existence of the jails for small children. No, it was the second paragraph that Maddow couldn't get through:
Lawyers and medical providers who have visited the Rio Grande Valley shelters described play rooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis. The government also plans to open a fourth shelter to house hundreds of young migrant children in Houston, where city leaders denounced the move Tuesday.
Rachel Maddow doesn't cry easily. But it feels like we've been in a kind of Walter Cronkite getting the teletype from Dallas point in the news for several days now.
Ironically, Maddow's completely human inability to power through the latest dispatch from the New Cruelty came at the end of a program in which she had warned that outrage, disgust, and protest carry little weight with the Trump administration and its most trollish supporters, who actually revel in cruelty. Pointing out that there's no evidence at all that family separation will slow migrants from coming to the US, Maddow observed that the "president" and his supporters seem content that it's at least outrageous, and unites them in their delight at liberal tears. Appeals to humanity and decency don't move the administration. Spite does.

And the courts do, which is where she was going with that, in her very Maddowwy way -- she brought on Slate legal maven Dahlia Lithwick, and the two agreed that where morality and logic and protest fail, the courts have held the line against some of the worst abuses. At least so far.
Maddow later tweeted a thoroughly unnecessary apology:
Ugh, I'm sorry. If nothing else, it is my job to actually be able to speak while I'm on TV. What I was trying to… https: //t.co/0xL06bdflZ

As if to prove her point about how Trump people think about children being taken from their parents -- and the psychological harm that can cause -- Fox News featured former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski mocking a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome who was taken away from her family, because migrants aren't people, they're enemy invaders, and their sufferings can be dismissed with a sarcastic "WAH-WAHHH" sad trombone:
you sitting down? here’s Corey Lewandowski mockingly saying “womp womp” to the story of a 10-year-old girl with Do… https: //t.co/c4nLYEPc7L

And that, kids, is what we're up against. People whose first and only reaction to the anguish of other human beings is to exult, "WINNING!" And then to deny there's anything wrong with that, because why is Rachel Maddow crying in support of MS-13?

What decent human being wouldn't cry? Instead of stopping, Maddow should have let her tears flow. Maybe it would wake a few of these assholes up.
If there were no money to be made from this, it would stop. Cut off the money and see what happens.
