I'm curious to know what all those South African "refugees" are up to these days. Are they living their best lives in a gold plated house with a gold plated shitter while all the black and brown folk bow to them and cater to their every need? Did 'Merica shower them with unlimited free housing, cellphones and SNAP benefits like the right seems to think we do for other reugees? Enquiring minds and all that.

Edit: I just did a google for "South African refugees where are they now?" and got this:

Return Movement: Reports indicate that due to high costs of living and adjustments, some refugees are considering returning to South Africa.

Because actual refugees totally have that option.

Just FYI: Most chromium used for automotive "chrome" plating and stainless steel parts is sourced from South Africa, which produces nearly half of the world's chromium ore.

Back in the mid-80's, there was a BIG STINK with lots of HEADLINES about apartheid in South Africa, and people were strongly encouraging the US government and big corporations to "dis-invest" in that country.

At the time I worked for a large state university, and I was assigned a project to research ALL international students from South Africa who had ever attended the university and focus on whether or not any of them had received scholarships from the university. Not one single Black South African student had ever received any kind of financial aid, while many White South African students had received aid. The records went back to the early 1900s.

My report was submitted to the Board of Curators, and they dis-invested some pension funds that were invested in companies with strong ties to the then-apartheid government.

But all that seems to have been forgotten now.

Good work well done....

Thank you. I was very proud at the time. It was the only time I got one single word of praise from my supervisor in the 4 years I worked for that asshole. Later on I discovered that he removed my name from the report and put his on it so he could take credit. He did shit like that all the time. He was a real sociopath. I intend to have a party on the day I read his obituary, but he isn't dead yet, alas.

I know this sounds horribly prejudiced, but looking at him I imagine he smells of ingrained lant and months-stale sweat.

"[T]he U.S. had presented five requests to the South African government"

Those are pretty 'in the weeds' demands.

- declare rural crime a priority?

- change parts of its affirmative action laws affecting American companies operating in South Africa?

Fuck you, go take care of your own country.

It used to be outside of typical moron special class donor ambassadors, that the US diplomatic corps used to represent the most educated and sometimes talented people the US had. Now thanks to the Trump Admin and MAGAt morons, those ambassadors have been replaced by the most base morons.

Pauly2coffees's avatar

Just like the rest of the federal government.

swmnguy's avatar

And they "typical moron special class donor ambassadors" at least usually took the opportunity to act like they had a little class, even if they didn't really. They put in the minimum effort to make it easier for their hosts to overlook the occasional blunders, failings, use of the wrong fork; that sort of thing.

These monsters truly want to kill us all for very short term profit.

The Trump administration is reviewing proposals to break up one of the world’s leading climate and weather laboratories, transfer its work to universities and private companies, take away its aircraft, and sell its property in Boulder, Colo.

The laboratory, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, has been targeted for months by the Trump administration. In a social media post in December, Russell Vought, the White House budget director, called the Colorado center “one of the largest sources of climate alarmism in the country.”

The center, founded in 1960, is responsible for many of the biggest scientific advances in understanding of weather and climate. Its research aircraft and sophisticated computer models of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans are widely used in forecasting weather events and disasters.

The "government of South Africa has been chasing white farmers off their land (or murdering them outright) and then seizing it as reparations for apartheid."

That really seems like the minimum that should be done. 'Karen' Bozell should be kicked out of the country or exiled to that island where they kept Mandela.
