Rebecca, this is a strange thing to say, but i think we have the same mom. jk, but the similarities are eerie. except i did get arrested at Diablo Canyon. anyway, so much love and hugs to you and your mama!
Thanks for sharing. My relationship with my parents is fortunately great and very functional. My husband, on the other hand, spent the last several months in therapy due to a highly fraught relationship with his mom and brother, and chose to not call or send anything to his mom this year. I know it was hard on him.
I have a picture of my grandmother at 15, standing next to a tree on the family farm, looking lovely and almost optimistic. She is about to dump the boy she loves to marry my grandfather, her parents' choice because he was recently born-again. He was in his late 20s. Sixty-two years later, when she was dying of breast cancer that had spread throughout her body, with my grandfather praying at her bedside, she would dream that the boy she had loved was coming for her.
I fully respect anyone who knows of Sam McGee; it was my Dad not my Mom who recited it (my Mom was more of a Mommas and Poppas type), but after 35 or 40 years I still remember “that night on the marge of Lake Labarge...”
Best daughterly tribute I've read on-line (and possibly in a book as well).

my mom died two weeks ago. this is so beautifully written.
If that picture is of your mother, then you look just like her. The same beautiful, warm sense of humanity beaming from that smile.
It won't do it if you don't want it to. Maybe it should read "can save you from alcoholism, if you let it."

Three cheers for Becca's mom!
Imma give that one an asterisk. I know a very highly functioning alcoholic who also smokes a buncha weed.

This one hits close to home. And it's very, very true.
Your mom. I like her.
Yeah, my dad, too.Think he also recited the "Face On The Barroom Floor"also "Dan MacRue" (sp?)
Ollie North is relevant again. This really sucks.
This South Bay girl is thrilled to see both Hermosa Beach and San Pedro mentioned in the first post she read this morning. :)
Also, your mom rocks.
