Oh yeah, there are definitely plant snobs! I only use the binomials when I'm with other people who work in the field(Heh!). But the reason for using binomials is not necessarily snobby, for instance, there are 3 native plants here whose common name is "Meadowsweet." They're 3 different genus and species. It helps when a customer can come in with at least a vague description of the plants they want. Most people know a lot more binomial nomenclature than they think they do; Hyacinth, Tulip, Narcissus, Impatiens, Coreopsis, etc. I've worked at a plant nurseries a few times, and I was amazed at the landscapers who came in not knowing even the common names of some plants...one guy didn't even know what a petunia was called. "It's one of those plants that will spill over the edge of the container. Their stems are fuzzy, and the flowers are sometimes stripey and sometimes solid coloured."
It's actually worse that that. It's the stench that keeps me from visiting. The developers ran a sanitary sewer down the middle of the creek so every time it floods, the sewer over flows. Some years ago the EPA did order a cleanup but now we have Scott Pruitt so...
