I had this conversation with my brother last night. His breaking point with politics was W's re-election in 2004, it basically turned him into a nihilist. I don't think I have it in me to go full-nihilist, I'll always believe that some things matter. But if Trump slimes his way back into the White House I may have to just totally disengage with American politics. Like it may be the thing that finally convinces me that this place is irreparably broken and it's time to stop just toying with a plan to go live in South America.
I'm not sure I will survive another Trump term and I am not being overly dramatic when I say that. A lot of people aren't going to.
I understand your exhaustion. I have felt the same. The normal stress of living @ age 70 are tough enough ( health problems, losing my parents, etc.) wondering if my country is going to Hell in a hand basket is multiplying everything.
Stumbling from self-made crisis to self-made crisis is no way to run a country, a business, or a produce stand. All that agita is not good for your heart.
The saddest thing about his idiot supporters is how they endlessly contort themselves into pretzels to avoid taking any responsibility for their failure in life--it is THOSE people's fault, it is THAT gubmint conspiracy-- anything other than, you know, work to better themselves, work at all, get an education, acquire a useful set of skills, learn something about the world. They're just so angry about how they are losers and failures. Then when all the "blaming the other" doesn't work, they have nowhere to go but to get angrier and angrier. They're just so fucking stupid. And EXHAUSTING.
Totally agree. It was just an on going, 4 years long, drain on my energy and emotional resources. Like having a broken toe or mysterious water leak in the basement or neighbor you suspect of domestic violence and you're not sure if you should intervene. I got by, but I wasn't at my best. For FOUR FUCKING YEARS. I will say however, in those 4 years, I started defriending Trump supporters. The first couple were painful. I wondered if I was just being intolerant of differing political views. But, looking back on that time, it really shaped who I am. I do't give it a second thought now and I'm so much happier, living to a creed. Are you a shitty person? Great, off you go.
Agree totally - anyone who is supporting Trump is either a rotten person or has chosen to believe blatant lies. Neither of those is a person I'm going to get along with for very long.
Me too, it was really hard at first, but it became more and more clear when a given friend and I had reached a stage where we couldn't live and let live, and would never grow close again.
Then, it felt completely okay to do the right thing, to call a time of death on each ended friendship.
I know it's hard for many liberals to understand - but as I keep pointing out - people aren't good.
They have behaviors and they're conditioned - if you like what they're doing then they're good, if you don't then they're bad.
There aint' no judges.
"In fact, I don’t even understand how it wasn’t a miserable time for his supporters, who had to spend every waking hour defending his bullshit and explaining “Why he didn’t mean what he clearly meant.”"
Because they enjoy hurting people. There are large numbers of human beings who want to hurt other people. It's why we keep killing each other.
I'm sorry, but liberals keep battling the human condition rather than accepting it and are thus always nonplussed when it is proven, that in fact, humans can be commonly and ordinarily pieces of shit. In fact, it is possible for the majority of people around you to be complete, despicable criminal shit worthy of a good hanging.
I'm sorry if I've interrupted the usual liberal love fest of "people are basically decent' idiocy.
What passes for a contrarian view of human nature here is really a collection of generalities and undefined terms (“good,” “pieces of shit,” “liberals.”) The people living in your head as liberals are a construct of your mind and the political commentators you listen to. The members of this commentariat are well aware that bad people do bad things and good people can be convinced to do or go along with bad things. This is why we fight — and educate. But we are also, by and large, kind to each other.
I know this is not going to be a popular post, but it contains some good points. Let's accept it as a valid expression of opinion, worth thinking about.
This is what I tell people who don't want to vote. Whatever it is that you care about, there will be no place for it under Trump.
I want to see the rapists' name in a headline THREE more times:
his loss next Wed
his sentencing
his obit

Seriously, that just made my fucking night. Thank you (and AOC) so much!
Ta, Robyn. No one here wants that.
Well, maybe one guy wants that...
He’s not here and fuck him.
Somehow, I glossed over the "here" part. But yes, fuck him regardless.
The Archbishop of Puerto Rico has demanded - *demanded* - a formal apology from Donald for the unchecked racism at his hate rally

Some people enjoy cruelty.

Self awareness takes the work that they’re just not willing to put in.
My sister's metaphor was that it's like having a Harley idling all day long in the cubicle next to yours at the office..
Don’t forget the “classic” 80s rock or country music blaring from the Hawg’s sound system.
Brava! Amazing post, Robyn! :))

Are you lost?
.
I can't imagine why you are here.
That's quite the existential question isn't it. Go think on it.
I think you're at the wrong rally
That's a smart reply!
