I think the chances that the rumors Gallego heard about Swalwell consisted of "he's flirty" are infinitesmal.

Always Be Ithacating's avatar

I guess Nancy Pelosi's behind-the-scenes counsel to Swalwell (“If you have a challenge that you have to address, it’s best addressed not as a candidate for governor and not as a member of Congress.”) is the kind of thing a long-time lawyer might say to client, but where is the outrage at his conduct, or the concern for his putative victims?

But it sure sounds like her only thoughts are political damage control ones. Maybe it's not a reflection on her so much as a reflection of the apparent fact that Congress remains a very retro, crappy environment for women.

Is it virtue signaling when it makes you look even sleazier, Mike Johnson and the House Republicans?

RRJKR's avatar

For the life of me, as a man, I will never understand what possesses these guys to do things like this. What pleasure can there be in forcing a woman into sex, and why in the world would they throw away their lives for one foolish act?

Another question, why do the victims wait so long to come forward? If you are the victim you need to report it to police IMMEDIATELY, not years later when all physical evidence is gone. Without the physical evidence, your case is much weaker and it becomes "he said she said" Your truthful account of the incident can easily be brought into question. It also might be a good idea to seek legal counsel yourself, to be certain you are on firm ground

Hmm. Somebody's hoarder room had a modem phone jack set that was recalled and yanked in the late 1990s because it interfered with amateur radio. BRAND NEW. Not sold in stores.

Am I a bad person for thinking a device that interferes with HAM radio is a selling point, and not a bug? Hey, it's a collectible! Come the Apocalypse, that neighbor being all snooty for being connected to the world via ham radio will be cut off, unless they cough up the canned beans.

Not doom related: Digging extra holes edition

So yesterday I went out to do A Thing that needed doing and it was...off. Like usually the things we do are marked "do this thing!" with bright flagging tape. This one was not.

Ok...maybe they did not get around to it yet? Our GIS files clearly show this is the thing to be done?

Then I found flagging going...another way....er.

Called in to ask and a bit later supe was all...they changed it and never updated their files (or, indeed, told us there was a change).

So in 88 degree (in APRIL!) weather I was out there digging holes that did not need to be dug.

The moral of the story: update your fucking GIS files you fuckers

Opalescent Riddles's avatar

I'm digging a hole where the flags hadn't been

It stops my mind from wandering

Where it will go

I'm searching for seams that were not there before

And kept my mind from wandering

Where it will go

RandomNameAllocated's avatar

Do you know the song "Hole in the Ground" by Bernard Cribbins? You. might appreciate it

Shocktreatment's avatar

That was my personal favorite thing in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD!

"Hmmm, 3 people, 16 hours and a buttload of material squandered on a job that you knew was off last week..."

It's working on my blood pressure even after all this time, vicariously

Whale Chowder's avatar

"Meh. Dig here, dig there, it all pays the same."

dave in texas's avatar

My experience has been that GIS updaters and their ilk in other industries aren't really all that concerned if they're not the ones that have to dig the holes.

Jenvinculosity's avatar

While true, because of all the cut backs, the field people ARE the GIS people also XD Like for us, it is me and supe. Only I do not like how she does it so I always just quietly do my own (she always leaves off the road layer. How the fuck am I supposed to find shit without knowing what road to take? zomg).

We are also our own administrative staff and we make thousands of Julienne fries

Opalescent Riddles's avatar

I know people who use the GPS in the car to direct them to nearby places they've already been to hundreds of times, which require no more than 3 turns at easily-identified intersections. Naturally they'll use it to tell them how to get to any new place, hand-entering latitude and longitude if they must. They have no need for, and no apparent interest in, roadmaps of any other kind.

Well, I am officially without a sense of smell. On a good note, it means I won't be awakened by a smelly cat poo for a few weeks, yay. The bad note is that nothing tastes like it could or should. My sweet potato fries (I have five big bags in the freezer) are AWFUL and just taste like fibrous nothings. Going to have to get some catsup for them. My eggs on sourdough are still pretty good. Cheese is...lonely, but grapes are still refreshing. Bananas are shells of their former selves.

Last time it seems like this lasted like 3 months and had a very slow return. Most people get it back though. The fatigue stage seems over, which should be helpful with work. Looking back I can see how foggy I was last week. I thought I was just smoking too much pot, LOL. Friday was especially difficult concentrating.

Still no sign of my tax return. Plan on calling in today. I got the missing money from my mortgage back this week so I am paying that off. I should find out if my April payment got lost, too, in the next few days. I worked out a system where I can just mail the checks through my bank anyway. That's better than using a third party service.

Noma Larkey's avatar

The only one time I know for sure I had Covid, I did not get the loss of smell thingy. I did, however, have loss of smell when I got a mild concussion from accidentally banging my head on the open wall oven door while rough-housing with the dog. It took nearly a year to get some level of smell back. I need to drop my 10lbs of winter weight gain, but I don't think ramming my head into the oven door in hopes of smell loss is a good way to do it!

Whale Chowder's avatar

This sounds like Covid? Or something else?

Hoping for a quick recovery regardless.

wait wait wait

JD changed his name a billion times. WHAR right wingers demanding he go by what was on his birth certificate?

MRK's avatar

That's even more idiotic than the quote I saw yesterday morning where he told the Pope to 'stick to matters of morality.'

Whale Chowder's avatar

Check me here: I thought determining whom god would favor would be pretty core to matters of morality if you're the religious sort. Did I miss a memo?

MRK's avatar

That's why I thought essentially telling the Pope to stick to sports was stupid. But JD has moved on from not understanding the Pope's job to thinking he knows scripture better than the Pope, which is an odd thing for most of us to say, and even more so for someone who calls themselves Catholic.

Craig Nixon's avatar

Plus, he's been a Catholic for, what, like 17 minutes now?

Jenvinculosity's avatar

About as long as he's been JD Vance!

Jenvinculosity's avatar

Wait til he hears what side the Catholic church was on in WWII

Whale Chowder's avatar

Or the Spanish Civil War. Wait, that doesn't help our side's argument.

Franco. They sided with Franco.

Jenvinculosity's avatar

To be fair they were not officially on Hitler's side in WWII. They were neutral, like the swiss, on account of We Should Not Take Sides in a War.

Which everyone knows was a wink and a nudge, but still, makes Vance's mouth fartings about WWII even funnier

Whale Chowder's avatar

Hahaha, "Shut up and preach!"

Jenvinculosity's avatar

He apparently does not think peace is a matter of morality

Land Shark 🇺🇦 🏳️‍⚧️'s avatar

...The highly unusual decision to visit the Fed underscored Ms. Pirro’s intention to aggressively pursue her investigation into Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair. Mr. Powell has been targeted by President Trump, who has blasted the chair for refusing to slash interest rates far below where they stand today.

Mr. Trump’s push to investigate Mr. Powell, who has fiercely defended the Fed’s independence, appears to be colliding with the reality that the Pirro-led investigation imperils chances of quickly confirming a successor when Mr. Powell’s term ends on May 15.

On Tuesday, the Senate Banking Committee announced it would hold a confirmation hearing next week for Kevin M. Warsh, Mr. Trump’s pick to replace Mr. Powell. The hearing will proceed despite the fact that a key Republican on the committee, Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, has said he will not advance Mr. Warsh unless the Justice Department drops the Powell investigation...

Nothing is pretty big news if Fox doesn't care to cover it.

true that. And also a trend I have noticed.

Our Free Press sure does a lot of follow the leader, don't it

MRK's avatar

Yeah. But also, aside from all of it being owned by 5 billionaires, too many of the reporters who remain are chasing that 'brought down Nixon' feeling, and without Fox's cooperation, that's just not happening.

Jenvinculosity's avatar
