DeWine is a quisling. He'll do the moderate dance until the right wing jumps in his s**t, then about face. Example: His response to Covid was good at the start, but after the anti vax/mask/lockdown crowd got too loud, he hanged Amy Acton MD out like a pinata. No Cookie for you, Mike. And yes, I live in Ohio.

for everybody saying "eh he doesn't get a cookie" or whatever ... do we want usually bad people to do a good thing, or do we want them to say "well I'll get shit on either way so might as well keep being awful"?

We progressives aren't persuading anyone to righteousness when we stomp on them for being good just as well as for being bad.

Pfft, I don’t think Mike DeWine actually gives a shit about doing something nice for trans folks. He’ll act like he’s done a noble thing and then when they override the bill he can act like he wasn’t being the bad guy.

He’s still a Republican and he’ll find a way to be extra Republican and harm trans folks along with other LGBTQ+ folks

I was going to say good for Mike DeWine, but by the second paragraph I realize the scam. He vetoes it and it the legislature overrides his veto so happens anyway. Now Republicans get to look a little more moderate without actually accomplishing anything. I guarantee you Mike DeWine would not have vetoed this bill if it would actually have kept it from happening.

I remember when Democrats were totally in the majority in DC and we would be like four votes down on a bill, Republicans would announce Lisa Murkowski, and Mitt Romney and Susan Collins would be willing to vote for the Bill. Wow, how moderate of them!! But then if we picked up one more vote on our side, one of those republican senators would immediately drop out so then only two would be left to vote for the Bill when three were needed to pass. See the scam in action?

OK all you lurkers. Join up! I want pictures of kitties. I don't want to see PAB's ugly puss ever again, but one week's respite will be very good for my mental health. Pictures of Simba and Little Feller are particularly desired, but all kitties are welcome.

It’s a sad state of affairs when listening to experts and the people affected by the legislation is enough to earn a republican a cookie.

I'd like to object to the assertion that DeWine occasionally thinks for himself, upon the lack of facts in evidence.

He's not going to get a pat on the head from me for doing the proper thing when his default setting is to do the shitty thing on every other issue.

What kind of republican is this govrnor of Ohio?

He actually talked to doctors and trans youth and their parents.

Amazing. Somewhat heartening.

Her story fueled anti-trans bills. Now, she’s fighting them.

Carey Callahan was once a prominent critic of gender-affirming care for minors. Then she began to worry her words were leading to outcomes she didn’t support.

This is a better more nuanced story than the one WaPo ran a few weeks ago about the detransioned young women who has been testifying in favor of bans but does not understand why the LGBTQ community does not trust her, or welcome her, while the right accepts her but scares her with all their guns and religion.
