Bill O'Reilly got offended when someone called the Pope a "primate" which is actually an accurate term for the pontiff. (Whether he sh--ts in the woods might depend on the circumstances.)
Judging by the increasing pervasiveness (over the past, say, decade or so) of typos and grammatical errors in virtually every written form of media in America, I'm guessing that very few actual journimalists will even catch the error, much less draw attention to it. I can only assume that there must be some sort of unwritten rule of etiquette that frowns upon calling out incompetence and/or mediocrity, for the simple reason that those qualities just fucking abound in all segments of our workforce, and society in general.
So, it would seem unrealistic to expect those peeps to elevate "a Ape" to the level of derision that "a Idiot" gets around here, y'know?
Standards? We are the Tea Party! We don' need no steenkeeng STANDARDS!!
