When I was a patient navigator (I was promoted), I led the weekly health promotion groups. No matter the topic that week, I started every group with a short demonstration of proper handwashing technique, and encouraged everyone to wear a mask that covers both nose and mouth.
I was thrilled when Black Enterprise (online) magazine published a profile of Kizzmekia Corbett, who had been working on a SARS vaccine for six years when Dr. Fauci tapped her (and the entire team she worked with) for the development of a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, better known as COVID-19. I printed the article for group attendees, some of whom were hesitant to get vaxxed. Why? She's Black, Christian, southern, and beautiful -- I knew she'd appeal to the people who came to groups. She's now teaching at Harvard and Radcliffe. Her team, and Dolly Parton's funding, gave us the Moderna mRNA vaccines.
I never stopped masking. I wear a KN-95 when on the bus or subway, and a paper mask (over a silicon frame that keeps it off my lips) everywhere in the clinic. The only time I'm unmasked is when I'm in my office alone with the door shut, and when I'm eating lunch. I'm not due for a booster until October, but I'm going to ask my PCP to give it to me as soon as it's available. Beloved husband Meccalopolis goes back to teaching K-5 right after Labor Day, and the snot puppets (as he calls them affectionately) will most certainly send him home carrying the virus. I should not have any trouble obtaining the updated shot; I'm over 65. I am well prepared for the next pandemic. I hope you are, too.
My beloved father was a doctor. JAMA and New England Journal of Medicine, thick volumes of entirely gray pages (all words, most of them very long words) arrived in the mail every week. I can still picture him sitting in the living room going through them, reading the articles that pertained to his practice, building a stack on the floor of the ones he’d gone through.
Shortly after the last election, Dad told me how disappointed and personally affronted he felt by Dr. Oz and Ronny Jackson et al. Doctors, he thought, should be held to a higher standard. He was so offended by RFK Jr that he could only shake his head.
Of course, RFKJ isn’t a doctor and clearly has no respect for doctors. My father, who was one of three students who wore black armbands on their white coats at the University of South Carolina medical school when JFK was assassinated, could not conceive of a Kennedy with such callous disregard for the health of human beings.
Over the last few years, Dad seemed to be preparing for the end of his life, as people do in their 80s. After the election he seemed to rally and said he wanted to live long enough to see the end of Donald Trump. Although I am glad he is at peace now, I wish he could have lived long enough to see the end of this godforsaken era in American history. If there is to be an end.
I repeatedly see fotos of Rubio next to Sir -- in these "Cabinet Meetin's" -- turning away to his right, dropping his head, and covering both his nose and mouth. It's as if he had just crossed the Rubiocon to escape the exhalations of Sir's ass trumpet only to find that, once on the opposite shore, the smell is even worse.
This has given rise to the Cabinet's salutation "Inhale Caesar".
There's no doubt that the Trump administration is advocating eugenics to "weed out" those whose bodies cannot cope with deadly communicable infections.
The unintended consequence is that the majority of deaths will probably be MAGAt voters.
Also, bless any researcher or other worker in the field for giving us the tools to actually keep things like screwworms in check while also being willing to put up with parasitic species.

The problem with sterile females is that females mate only once and then go lay their eggs. Males can mate with multiple females before they die. So it doesn’t matter how many sterile females a horny male mates with as long it finds at least one fertile female. But a sterile male will mate with multiple females without producing any viable offspring.
