Well that's encouraging! But yeah, I feel like the "he did it because he cared, and didn't want to risk One South Carolina Life!" voices will be louder and more plentiful than the "he freaked people out for no reason and wasted taxpayer money!" voices. I hope I'm wrong. Hopefully somebody is getting some good footage of Smith doing useful things as a National Guardsman.

I am not sure that this will get McM reelected. Might there be enough people annoyed with leaving home for no reason, for this to be a slight negative?I tend to continue pessimistic about the statewide vote, and then there's this sign I saw driving through Cottageville https://uploads.disquscdn.c... , not far from a DON'T TREAD ON ME flag. I first saw the other side, blue letters on white, when I approached from the west.

The hubs and I thought the exact same thing about McMaster when he started yammering about the storm last, what, Saturday or Sunday? When NOBODY was talking SC yet; it was supposed to hit NC and then head north, and the high pressure system that eventually pushed it down toward us was not in the picture at all. We were like--that fucker is just doing this because he thinks it's going to get him reelected. Unfortunately, it will. That clip of him saying "we do not want to risk one South Carolina life" that got played over and over is his golden ticket. It would be different if he actually cared, but he doesn't.

I know for a fact that when he took over as governor, he did not give two shits about participating in the hurricane prep tabletop exercise. Like, he was a huge dick about it, apparently. A family friend was on staff and in the room. It was evident last year with Irma that he still did not have two shits to give. As you know, for a while there her winds were like 185 with gusts to 225. She was fucking terrifying. Like Mrs. G, I prefer to ride out storms at home, but Irma had me freaked out and packing. And she was forecast to come up through the middle of GA, SC, and NC, which created a situation where if people on the coast had to bug out, they needed to have enough warning and lead time to prep and head out a few days ahead of the storm since it was looking like the nearest safe places to go were clear on the other side of GA/SC/NC. So if we decided to leave, we would need at least a day to pack enough stuff for all of us, and to try and protect or pack up our irreplaceables (family heirloom type stuff), and to secure everything on the property and figure out what to do with the animals and whatnot, and load up both cars. Then figure at least two days for travel, since errybody from FL was escaping north and errybody from GA was headed north or west, and South Carolinians were going every which way, not to mention NC, so the roads were a mess. It took my stepmom 20 hours to get from coastal GA to the NC mountains and that was without kids or animals. We didn't end up leaving.

Sorry this is long already. Anyway, McMaster was just sort of "meh" about Irma, and it was clear from his press conferences that none of it really mattered to him and he didn't seem at all familiar with the long-established state emergency plans and prep protocols (because he wasn't), and he (IMO) ordered evacs too late. Then he turned into Angry Grandpa and fussed at evacuees for getting too much gas at the pumps (!) on their way out of town, FFS. He said, "Y’all, we’ve been through these things before--you got to be reasonable. You don’t need a full tank of gas if a half a tank will get you to Spartanburg.” I mean are you fucking kidding me? Since when does a half a tank of gas get anyone from the coast to fucking Spartanburg? Especially in stop-and-go traffic on a trip that could take an entire fucking day if you're lucky, and with most gas stations along the way being out of gas. Fuck that guy. (I still have that exact quote of his because I was so pissed off about it I texted it to my husband as soon as I heard it. It still pisses me off).

But that was last year, and this is this year. Now that it's an election year, he magically seems familiar with the disaster protocols and managed to act, for a few days anyway, like he actually cared. (Now he is Angry Grandpa again). I agree with you, he pushed the panic button too soon. This storm wasn't at all like Matthew or Irma where you couldn't escape south. With this one we had the luxury of it being more of a wait-and-see thing, especially for those in Charleston County and southward. Evacuating all nursing homes and health facilities along the entire SC coastline? Fucking. Ridiculous.

That is a fact and I do not condemn any nation that mistrusts the US. There is a price to paid for treachery.

Yep. Until we fix our rules so this shit can't happen again, nobody will trust us to stay sane.

This is why all this independent party nonsense is so fucking harmful. But the whiny MEMEMEMEME shitheads just don't get it. "Why CAN'T we have a third party?" BECAUSE OF SHIT LIKE THIS.

It seemed like not many, at first. Then the neighborhood seemed much quieter yesterday.Your neighbor's regret depends on how the kids get along. Sounds like a nice road trip to me.I would have taken off except Mrs. G insists on riding these things out. Big storm wind/rain is depressing. The evac felt like a political CYA, as work expected to keep going except NC. Then work shut down Tuesday with zero preps. Playing the track back, I think McAsshat should have done voluntary Tuesday, then Grand Strand mandatory on Wednesday, then Charleston Thursday.Very hard to hindsight the Midlands. Who had any money on a 2015-scale flood system in Columbia?

We are south of there about 5 hours. I am hearing though that Cucuta is dangerous right now, in term of the security situation for everyone. What country did you visit here in South America?

One of our neighbors took her kids down to Jacksonville early on. She's probably regretting that now. Did many people up where you are evacuate?
