There was the small matter of the very public (bogus) arrests of Black people for voter fraud. I think that had something to do with subsequent turnout.

What did the aardvarks ever do to you?

There are a lot of reasons to advise kids away from individual books, maybe even for setting rules about when and how they can be read. And there ARE certain books that plain shouldn't be in school libraries - the works of the Marquis de Sade, for instance.

But there is NO justification for this censorship. DeSantis is coldly and deliberately sacrificing LGBTQIA+ kids and their allies, for political expediency. He is despicable.

Hopefully the decent principals are bundling the letters up and forwarding them on to the local representatives. But lots of the kids will be too young to realise someone as awe-inspiring as their School Principal isn't the Boss of the World.

Given few people want to be the target of screaming MAGA mobs urged on by Greg Kelly and Tucker Carlson, the actual chilling effect of this legislation on book selection will be far greater than its technical legalistic effect. "Err on the sid of caution" will become in practice "Christ no, there's a picture of two boys hugging, you can't put that in the library."

Which of course is exactly the outcome the Christianists wanted.

Don't fret. They will soon be filled with stories of the Founders, Iwo Jima and the centrality of Christianity to civilization.

Yeah, that's gonna be a shitshow. Most of the worst excesses seem to be aimed at primary schools, but DeSantis and his goons certainly have their eye on older students - witness the debacle over the African-American studies AP course. At least the current crop of high schoolers have the benefit of decent early learning. They'll have concepts like respect for the scientific method, critical thinking and reading, which is much more important than specific course content.

But the current crop of littlies will bear permanent educational scars. Even if all this bullshit stops tomorrow, damage has been done to their education. Early learning time is irreplaceable. The damage can be mitigated but those kids will never be all that they could have been, and the longer this bullshit goes on the more disadvantaged they will be.

Think of kids who've been home-schooled so their parents can better indoctrinate them into some alternate universe of fundamentalism or conspiracy theories. If they ever get out they have to unlearn all the bullshit they were taught; then start learning how to function in contempory society. They lose years of their adult lives just getting to the starting line, the level of knowledge and understanding they should have had as high school graduates.

DeSantis is inflicting that on the youth of an entire state. He's stealing their potential and everyone's future, for his rotten political gain. There are absolutely no words for my contempt, disgust and grief about what's being done to these kids.

At least their Grandpa isn't at school.

Oh, they care very much how it impacts students. That's the whole point. An ignorant population is much easier to control than an educated, curious one.

Fair. I got tired of the monotony of rat dicks. They're metaphorical aardvarks, if that's any consolation.

It certainly is. Could he perhaps choke on them not quite so metaphorically?

Fucking insane.

DeSantis and his allies aren't protecting the kids, they're protecting themselves from the kids. They fear the the adults those children will become if they learn anything DeSantis doesn't want them to know. DeSantis wants a generation of Stepford Kids who will obey their bosses, vote Republican, and never think for themselves.

Absolutely, and on top of all of the problems caused by COVID as far as learning loss, it is especially cruel. The kids have already had their education disrupted, they sure as shit don't need this backwards ass bullshit on top of it. If I was a parent in Florida, I'd seriously consider moving if I could.

This makes me cry. When we moved to the box made of out-of-ticky-tacky I was six. It was one of the first and worst humiliations of my life that I could not have a library card until my seventh birthday. I had to take out books on daddy’s card. This is SO much worse.
