You know the military uses all kinds of acronyms and abbreviations, so the usual appellation for a JAG Officer is pretty easy to figure out.

I appreciate your story and angle on interpreting the governor's actions - but your use of the slur "Messicans" is offensive and reckless. You may not know the scale and importance of this demographic to the U.S. economy and its future. I suggest you consider a different type of hook to shock your readers into engaging next time.

skinnercitycyclist's avatar

It is not used as a slur per se, it is used as an ironic commentary on the attitudes of DeSantis and his supporters. We can use irony, even though some may not seem able to understand it.

I wasn't shocked. By the power of my supreme reading comprehension I saw the irony and the intention behind that irony and was completely unflabbergasted. Supportive, even.

Hey Skaarpy, it doesn't take much supreme reading comprehension to see the irony but it does require some sensitivity to see that the use of the term is insensitive at the least - hopefully your supreme skills will help you understand that doing so is offensive.

Is it though? What about saying 'Mericans instead of Americans? Also unacceptable?

whatever that means Nip - obtuse if you want. would you also use the N word in the same way?

Expand full comment
skinnercitycyclist's avatar

Why not? There is a famous scene from Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" where the n-word is used exactly in this way.

I despise racism and the current seditionist wing in the USA right now, but I also save some dudgeon for virtue-signaling tone-trolls.

CMM Loyalty's avatar

Understand? To assume that I as a reader don't understand the irony is perhaps where this emanates - despite your keen tone-trolling detection ability. The irony is easy to understand but the fact that it is offensive seems not to be. Lorraine Hansberry (black author) used the N word in a completely different context and wrote that beloved play in a different period of our checkered history. Today, most of us understand that for a non-black person to use the N word is off limits. There are those who still don't or won't get that; the same applies to other racial slurs. Refusing to acknowledge that and to purport that you understand the irony - but others don't or that they should have thicker skin - is unfortunate.

As a Mexican American who lives in ARIZONA (Tucson, no less, full of us here), we see the results of drugs and such. HOW ABOUT ADDRESSING THE ISSUES THAT LEAD TO ADDICTION? How about subsidizing treatment and housing. How about working WITH MEXICO to see what we can do together? How about you stop blaming Mexico for all our social problems

If nothing else, the Dear Leader of the One Star rated state leads the country in exporting immigrants--30,000 in the past year alone. Perhaps now that he's committed negligent homicide in addition to human trafficking, he can finally be indicted for his crimes, by states, the DoJ and/or the ICJ.

There are many “non-line” officers who have really served in combat: chaplains, doctors, nurses. Many of them put themselves in harms way, because that’s what you do when you are called to serve. I can’t say for sure what Meatball Ron did in Iraq, but in my 24 years in the military, with 2+ years deployed, I’ve never known a lawyer who left the fortified command post. And according to the article linked about his service, “DeSantis made sure detainees captured by SEALs during their missions were treated humanely. He also ensured that interrogations complied with the Geneva Conventions and US military law.” Given what we know about him, all I can say is “those poor detainees…”

The consequences that might ensue from using the United States military to board and seize our largest adversary’s civilian vessels in international waters do not seem to have entered his snarling little noggin. Or they have and he doesn’t care.

Being that he's a former JAG, even though he was a terrible one who found excuses for human rights violations, I'm going to go with "he knows, and he knows it'll never happen for that very reason, but he figures the MAGA base doesn't know, doesn't care, and just want to hoot and beat their chests. And any time they ask why it hasn't happened yet once he's in office, he'll just distract them with the newest Threat Du Jour."

Is drone bombing Mexico before or after DeSatan slits the throats of his enemies?

I get so confused by this guy, it's hard to tell where he stands on punishing people he doesn't like.

You have to think that over time, a guy like DeSantis who goes around talking about how he wants to physically hurt or kill other people will have people edging away from him. Or running.

You start to get the idea that he is not about "defense" or "justice," he's in it for the administration of pain. And you get a sense the field of targets could easily widen.

Although I have half-seriously suggested Mexico launch drone strikes on US border gun shops, turn-about would be fair play... perhaps before leaving office just over a year from now, Lopez Obrador can slap sanctions on these bozos and their supporters, going after their assets and those of anyone doing business with them. Sounds minor, to be sure, but that would include just about every US business that uses either Mexican manufactured parts (medical supplies, auto parts, automobiles, etc.) or imports Mexican materials... vegetables, minerals, oil...

On the other hand, raving loonies like DeSantis (and before him, Trump) are a god-send for the Mexican left... making it impossible for candidates from the right to use their usual "friend of the Americans" pitch while campaigning, forcing them to think multipolarity.
