Factory owner may be a hard man, but the pay is usually the same from week to week and if he should reduce it, he will reduce it for all at the same time.
Notice this about the men with capital: he needs the flexibility of workers. He needs them to work when he needs them to work. And the work is unconnected from the cycle of the seasons or the cycle of the day. And so he disconnects his workers from the natural world.
Look at how we improves his factories. If his latest machines work faster, the humans that support them must work faster. If the machines can accomplish more, than fewer, humans are needed. The clock is the master of this age, and the factory owner is constantly innovating. Plus the worker must be flexible in order to find some role within that system.
But look what happens. The worker is expected to leave all of their other allegations in life during the time by the clock that they give to the factory. Whereas under feudalism of poor serf lmight bring their children or with them into the fields, or scamper amidst the loom set up in the front room of the family cottage, the worker of necessity must temporarily abandon their children in order to take on flexibilities needed for factory work.
And at present the factory owner is under no obligation to mitigate the costs that come from us. There is some talk of compulsary daytime public education, but for now, in this mid-victorian age, it is the workers themselves that must somehow unite to ensure that their children are safe. In a binary marriage, it of necessity requires that one partner stay in the home. This was unknown in feudalism.
What feudalism was worse in one respect. While the clock dictates that a worker must contribute 100% of his efforts during his hours of work to building value for his employer, those hours he does not work belong exclusively to him and to his family. This was unknown in feudalism.
And so if something could be done to reduce the working hours and increase the non-working hours, worker might with his efforts take back something of the value he adds by having you unstructured time for himself and his loved ones.
A synthesis is needed, you might say, from the system of feudalism and its antithesis capitalism.
