Ask to work on a Democratic-voters list, which will weed out all but the occasional independent who decides to be a curmudgeon. Mostly GOTV and "did you get your ballot?" in my state (Oregon). If you call in the afternoons, you'll get nice older folks who like to chat it up a bit sometimes.
I did get a right-winger (wrongly coded on our call-list) who had quite the tangle of conspiracy theories once, but I think he just needed to talk, and we were able to agree that people really should be nicer to each other.
Safe-Democratic lists are very different from broader call lists.
