From The Economist, "Democrats seem to take social distancing more seriously than Republicans"
In Florida, people in Democratic counties on the Atlantic coast, such as Miami-Dade and St. Johns, have restricted their movements more than those in Republican-counties on the Gulf coast and in the Panhandle.Democrats seem to be taking the crisis more seriously than Republicans. In a poll by the Pew Research Centre, 59% of Democrats said covid-19 is a major threat to the health of Americans; only 33% of Republicans said that. The Unacast data suggest people are acting on their opinions, risking infection from, and spreading, a virus that has killed more Americans than the 9/11 attacks.
Florida's governor has basically done the same thing. He sat around avoiding making a stay-at-home order and when he finally did it was so weak that it was actually less strict than his previous stay-at-home suggestion.
Gov. McMaster is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Unlike most in his party, he seems to believe in science (or he's paying great lip service to it). He's trying to be the elder, and in this situation, moderate Republican, statesman. Let's compare that to the Gen X Republicans Governor's Club. These governors still think that they are invincible to everything, including this virus. I see you Oklahoma, Mississippi, Florida, and South Dakota. That would help to explain some of their policy and personal decisions in the last few weeks. Looking at you Kevin in particular. Finally, McMaster is constrained by the Dear Orange One, and the freedumb voters (currently screaming tyranny at the top of thier still working lungs) who keep him in power.
Lived there from 1995 to 2014. Miss it, especially the Japanese Garden in Washington Park) but glad I got out before so much of what made it special to me was lost.

Given that Trump is selectively withholding PPE and ventilators to blue states and blue cities -- a/k/a genocide by medical negligence -- prevention is pretty much all we have.

All the times I drove from Maryland to Georgia and I never visited Columbia. Beautiful.
IIRC, Oregon was founded as a "whites only" state, which would make it pretty fucking white for a while.
otherwise nice people libelz
I'm not understanding his reasoning to cut medicaid during a time of crisis.

Meanwhile, Florida has just over 14,000 confirmed cases and almost 300 deaths and our governor is about as useful as scuba gear on the moon.
Thanks for that lovely Greenville video from the Before Times. It was a nice interlude.

I thought Marge Innovera was a staffer on Car Talk.
I live in, and love, Portland, but -- sadly -- all that you say is true.

Really, anybody except Ben Garrison.
Brett Butler said that she planned to write a book about the South called, "When Beautiful Places Happen to Bad People".
