I FUCKING LOVE MURDERBOT!

I listened to the audio versions (twice each, so far) and let me say that the narrator, Kevin R Free is absolutely superb as the voice of Murderbot. His timing is perfect and his delivery is sublime. (So many laugh out loud moments the people on the bus were giving me concerned looks.”

Listening to a “romantasy” right now “Quicksilver” (very good, also) and will probably listen to Murderbot again next.

I listened to the series, and the voice actor (who is male) captures Murderbot's attitude - and ART's as well - perfectly.

Thing I love about Murderbot is that it gives exactly zero fucks!

While Apple+ has cast a man in the role of Murderbot, it's a woman's voice I hear in MY head reading these books. And most of the books in the series are short, which is nice actually. It's like they are individual chapters in one much larger book.

According to Wells (or, rather, most likely, her publicist) "Right now Martha has no plans for a 'Sanctuary Moon' book, though that doesn't mean it won't happen some day.  FYI, the real world inspiration for 'Sanctuary Moon' is the TV show 'How to Get Away With Murder.' "

I have loved this series since she first started publishing it, and there is so much to unpack in it - the slavery, the idea of personhood, the idea of society and how it relates to each other under both surveillance and free will. Also the sarcasm and eye rolling 'what are you people even thinking' attitude of SecUnit is so refreshing. She takes it on a mental journey, and she's realistic about the trauma and recovery of being a slave/unperson trying to make sense of the world around it. The books can be read at face value, or you can dive deep, and either way it's one of the best series that i reread on a really regular basis and I always find something new

Speaking of the funny, I'm about to start reading (been saying that for almost two weeks now) Tamsyn Muir's "Gideon the Ninth" because I've only heard good things about it, and I haven't read fantasy in some time.

"Why, it’s almost as if unrestricted capitalism is a system of oppression, too."

You can ditch "unrestricted", Dok.

LOL Ditto, good one Dok!!!! I just got done re-reading the entire Murderbot series for about the sixth time. So fun. Murderbot has more "humanity" in him than 95% of republicans LOL

Minor edit: “99.999999% of Republicans”.

Every time I'm in a book chat somewhere, and Murderbot comes up, I simply respond "MURDERBOT!!!" and everyone immediately agrees and upvotes. I have not read everything by Martha Wells but I adore Murderbot and will find her other stuff. I've got Murderbot 7 on my TBR pile right now. My partner loves that I buy each one as it comes out for Partner. We're big fans! I might get Apple+ just to watch the series. And we share our copies around to friends so they get to experience them, too.

I am late to the party, so it’s a safe guess that no one will read this but that’s OK because this is really where this belongs. And I’ve got stuff I need to say. Until very recently (about half an hour), the only thing that I’ve read by Martha Wells is a paragraph quoted above, which led me to go looking for more about Martha Wells.

I checked out the Wikipedia article because sometimes whoever writes those things sees fit to include an author’s literary influences, and I was curious about that for her. It did not, but it had an oh my gosh, impressive Bibliography, and this woman has turned down multiple important literary awards because it was somebody else’s turn.

I noticed that she was also a breast cancer survivor, and I clicked on the link about that because I wanted to know how she was doing. The link led me to blog post that she wrote about that last year, at which time she had a very favorable prognosis, from what I can make out.

And I scrolled briefly through her other blog posts, And zeroed in on one she wrote about Project 2025 and the freedom to read. It was on authors against book bans. Which led me back here. Sub stack has been pitching fits, so I am going to pause here and post and if I am successful, come back in a little bit and edit on.

In the aftermath of the election, I have been struggling to find a way forward that doesn’t end at denial or despair, compelling as both of those options may be. Last week, I was driving through a beautiful winter twilight, and it occurred to me that if we are experiencing the rise of Nazism, it is sen if all those voices that spoke and tried to warn us, it is as if their art and music and poetry and novels and biographies were for nothing, it is as if those voices turned to dust and blew away on the wind.

And a few days later, I stumbled upon my own way forward. I decided that it would be my responsibility, especially in light of the possibility of a book burning, such as we have never seen, of an electronic erasure, I would take it upon myself to spread awareness of these voices. It is such a small thing, but it feels authentic and true and trustworthy.

I started by sharing this article. https://www.abc.net.au/religion/simon-tedeschi-choosing-humanity-what-it-means-to-be-jewish/103096210

I have more. I have heroes I want to tell you about, and by heroes, I mean, people who are heroes to me. Because someday someone might try to take their voices away, but if I share them with you, then they live on in you. In doing so, I hope to find my path forward from here.
