You mean women aren't mysterious if you ever listen to them or ask them questions about themselves? Who knew?! (I knew, despite my school being all-boys from 11-16)

And just how... HOW?!... is it that we have reached the year two thousand and twenty four and only just now are we thinking "hey, this stuff that used to be part of the uterine lining, do you think we should find out if it could tell us anything about what's going on in the uterus it came from?"

I know, I know, my first rhetorical question answers my last.

O. M. G.

Never thought of how my ADHD may have influenced my postpartum symptoms and the way I handled an unexpected Cesarean delivery and problems with breastfeeding. I also know I'd had symptoms of OCD for years, but after my first delivery is when it really ramped up and I needed medication.

Definitely a fascinating subject and looking forward to more research.

And Robyn.... Since you have ADHD as well..... Have you ever thought of reporting on the shortage of meds? Or.... The lack of bioequivalence of some of the generic meds they just switch out willy nilly with no warning? While some would call it trivial, that is one of the biggest medical issues in my life. Not to mention the costs and the fact that even people who have insurance are insured by companies that won't even pay for brand name meds but then allow pharmacies to dispense whatever crap generics they got the best deal on that month. If there's anything me and my neurodivergent girlfriends talk about the most, it's probably that!

I am FASCINATED by the ties between ADHD and PPD. I suspect I may have undiagnosed ADHD (but the very much diagnosed anxiety disorder has so far kept me from exploring that with a professional) and I got hit hard by PPD. I chalked it up to the trauma of my postpartum preeclampsia, but I'm now wondering if I would have been less traumatized if I'd been more neurotypical.

Also makes me wonder about whether there's a connection between GAD and ADHD, my wife also has a diagnosis for the former but not the latter, though traits of it are strongly expressed.

It wouldn't surprise me-- apparently part of ADHD is rejection sensitive dysphoria, and the symptoms thereof feel like a one to one match for social anxiety disorder.

That makes a lot of sense to me

And could we please have more studies on the effects of menopause and how to alleviate the symptoms? Some women get through it fine. Others live the latter third of their lives in menopause hell.

Expand full comment

Having had a total hysterectomy but kept my ovaries and with a few more years to go left before full menopause, I can safely say that while some of the terrible no good period thoughts of mine came from the awful pain of adenomyosis and a mutant uterus, others are emitted straight from the ovaries. My mood is still pretty variable throughout the month, especially now that I'm raw dogging life without 1 mg of extra estradiol in the mornings.

"...it is pretty bananas that a scientific-minded fella like Pliny The Elder, even in the first century, would seriously think this is what happens during menstruation."

Urgh. I always hate statements like this, even when clearly sarcastic. Science -- the notion of systematically gathering and verifying factual data in order to test the accuracy of any conclusions derived from them -- is an invention of the modern age. Prior to the Renaissance, questioning established, well-beloved and oh-so-logical theories about how the natural world worked was not a thing. Aristotle famously claimed that women have fewer teeth than men do...despite being married twice, it apparently never occurred to him to ask one of his wives to open her mouth so he could count them. And despite obvious errors like this, Aristotle was considered to be the ultimate authority on natural philosophy for millenia.

I don't live in the States anymore so therefore don't know what commercials are like there, but is it still blue liquid poured onto pads in TV ads to demonstrate their absorbency?

Expand full comment

I'm still in the states, but don't have cable and haven't for over a decade now. Streaming forced commercials seem to care more about how you poop or a new drug you should ask your doctor about.

Future Speaker Hakeem Jeffries’ press conference where he rips apart Moscow Marge and other MAGAt republicans.

Jeffries is a true statesman. Which rather concerns me. I can totally see him pulling a ''we need to look to the future and work with our colleagues on the other side of the aisle'' after we take back the house. He lacks the killer instinct that we're goin to need. Negotiation with the Republican party is no longer an option. They must be obliterated. And we have the tools and the power to do it once we take back the house. Comer and Jordan must be investigated for abuse of power within the house. MTG and Matt Gates must be taken off of all committees. Nancy did it before with MTG Jeffries can do it again with a number of the bad actors. Due to them what they would do to us. we can only secure generational power if we go in for the kill. Waffling and playing nice is just going to piss everybody off who worked so hard to take back the house.

Yep, we NEED Dems with teeth that ACKNOWLEDGE Republicans are the God damn enemy.

As long as he does't try to keep the progressive caucus on a leash like Pelosi did. We're cool! And as mvario notes above, the prognosis looks good. But we must investigate, Comer and Jordans abuse of power when Republicans held the house. That can't go unpunished. That's really my only concern. He won't have the stomach to take out the trash. But we shall see! I'm sure he's having a lot of very interesting conversations with the Democratic caucus in the house right now for when we take back the house in November.

Whatever the Feds were doing chemical warfare with here in PDX during the 2020 protests messed up the menstrual cycles of all the young gals I knew. Some were still having problems over a year later.

My grandfather would not like it when my sister and I would climb the fruit trees on our property because girls climbing trees would sour the fruit on the trees or so the superstition went. The mango trees still stand and the mangoes are still sweet so I guess that superstition was wrong.

Menstruation is a complex process, and can be affected by external stimuli. However, I can't initially see the connection to the Covid vaccine For God's sake don't let the anti-vaxxers get ahold of this bit.

They'll surely turn it into yet another arrow in their quiver of fallacies,

Expand full comment

It was not the COVID vaccine specifically - it was the intense immune reaction. Actual COVID would have done the same thing if I had caught it before getting a vaccine. As it was, the period wackiness was a blessing for me since it finally let me get diagnosed with a bicornuate uterus and get a hysterectomy (it killed the oral BC that had kept my periods suppressed for 10 years prior to that. I went from no periods to yes periods, and my periods fucking HURT. So it had to go.)

Any novel vaccine or disease that caused a serious immune reaction would probably have caused the problem.

It's a shame it took so long for you to get properly diagnosed Being a man I can only offer sympathy from a clinical standpoint, can't begin to comprehend all of the physical pain and emotional strain associated with menstruation Couple that with the fact that in our society it was kind of a taboo subject until just recently Maybe that's why they called it "The Curse" My wife always suffered from painful periods which nobody seemed to be able to diagnose, She welcomed menopause for that reason.. I did try to commiserate but she often found that more irritating than comforting. As a means of helping me better understand what she was going through, she once offered to kick me in the nuts every time she had a particularly bad cramp. I respectfully declined the offer, such a thing as being too aware. LOL Anyway glad you found some relief, Keep the faith

The studies were actually quite careful around this, and the effect wasn’t universal but it also wasn’t a myth just because it’s hard to understand why it occurred for some. Dr. Jen Gunter has a good summary on The Vagenda.

I did not notice an effect with the vaccines or boosters, and having Covid post-vax did delay my cycle, but so do most bad colds for me. But it’s super important to note that just because something didn’t happen to us, or that the mechanism isn’t understood, that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Women are frequently discouraged from reporting any symptoms of any diseases, of the body or the body politic, for various benefits to others. Yes, this particular one can and does lead to alarmism but that does not mean we have to conceal it or not look for the facts. I’d ask that you consider your comment in this light.

My period showed up when I got my second booster. It came a few days earlier than expected but I was already feeling like I got hit by a truck so I actually got to sleep in and relax for the first few days of my period.
