They have become part of the rwnj propaganda machine. No secrets there. The wealthy want complete control of everything. Clearly they didn't get the memo that mainstream media is on it's last leg and they helped end it. Guess they need a new loss on their taxes.

Assorted quick reactions to that podvid that I want to listen to later:

- Thank you, Bothsidestimes, for letting me finally see what Lulu looks like after years of hearing her on Weekend Edition.

- One way you know the new boss isn't the same as the old boss is that Scott could DO that interview. I'm sure Bari* Vice is passing out NDAs all over the place now.

- * And we inevitably pronounce her first name "BARR-ree" like Noho Hank did when addressing Bill Hader's titular method actor/serial killer character. I like to think of him throwing a submarine sandwich at her before shooting.

- The lead-in with the quick hits of the legendary ticktick anchors, the dead ones now spinning in their graves to run the turbines powering Black Rock, reminded me of an old New Yorker cartoon I sadly cannot find. It was captioned "A Man with a Clear Conscience." A business executive (old, white, male) at his desk, approached by secretary (sweet, young, thing):

"Mike Wallace is here to see you."

"Send him right in."

Nerd-o-rama so dodge this if you're not tech.

I'm working in US heathcare. We've fucking white labeled some apps to some fucking giant company, Medtronic.

They really want the diabetes one. It's a good fucking app.

So we deliver on android and iphone. Nice branding and shit for these tossers.

They start whining about our fucking android app.

Now, here's today. Mkt cap 103.03B

We turn over about 8M on a good year. We know this fucking app works. Otherwise, well, we'd fucking know.

They're whining though. It crashes. Sometimes. Hangs. Just stops working. Not always. Not always on startup, but it'll just stop working.

These are the worst fucking bugs. If you have something consistent you can diagnose it. We spend two weeks fucking diagnosing our app. I get fed up. I think it's them. I don't know why yet, but it's only happening when it's whitelisted to them.

Right, motherfuckers. Let me hit your fucking backend. I know you're using IIS because you're bellends.

Req 1. Fine. Req 2. Fine. Req 3. Fine. Req 4 .... wait is that a truncated certificate chain? Req 5. Fine.

Certificate chaining is how https works. You need a proper chain of certificate authorities. Most things cache the intermediaries. iphone does. Most browsers do. Edge does.

Android doesn't. Android wants the full fucking chain every time or it barfs and tells you to fuck off.

So Medtronic have multiple servers serving the app. One of them is misconfigured to not serve the entire cert chain.

Which broke our app. It's not us. It's you. And I'm going to tell you the IP address of the server which is misconfigured and tell you the exact little checkbox to click to make it work again.

Tiny tiny company tells $100Bn company where they fucked up and why.

Oh, you have to be sure.

IIS as a back end? WTF? Did we time travel back to 2002? And the Android SSL lib must suck donkey balls. At LEAST Apple does the security shit properly. Hate on them all you want, but IOS crypto libs are rock solid.

FukuiSanYesOta's avatar

It's frightening how many people still use IIS. This was 2017.

The Android stack is solid, man, I'm not going to shit on that. It does need the cert chain every time, but IIS makes the assumption it's talking to Edge.

I don't see a problem with sending the cert chain every time. We're not on 33.6K modems any more.

Apple people shit on, but I had a really good go at hacking them and ... nope. They're seriously good. I've been hacking and cracking shit for 40 years. And I go up against people who have been doing the same so they know how to stop people like me.

Apple, love 'em or hate 'em, are very good at security.

Was watching News Nation this morning and they were trumpeting the news that a (slim) majority of voters preferred Capitalism over Socialism. I was surprised, assuming a vast majority would prefer Capitalism because it's what they were baked into.

A large majority of voters have no idea what either is.

Well Dressed & Incredibly Jen's avatar

The vast majority does not even know what socialism is, so a slim majority preferring capitalism is rather surprising.

[Land Shark editorial]: If we think back a few short years, the ScamCoin™ "industry" (the tech-bros) tried to make cryptocurrency "inevitable." That those crypto-bros thought they could sell that shit to American public showed how really out of touch they are. The AI-bros are trying to do the same thing, but at hyperspeed and on steroids. The difference this time is how much of the US economy is wrapped up in the AI hype. Scary amounts of money ... https://isaiprofitable.com/. The only real companies making real money with AI are those selling hardware: Nvidia, memory chip companies (SK Hynix, Samsung), and maybe a few others. The rest are floating on clouds of hype. VaselineHabits's avatar

I tend to agree. And the way Pelly described the hostile takeover... I KNOW that's almost exactly what every other "news" is dealing with - bosses that want them to make "the left" (sane Americans) look "violent". Who knows how long that's been the instructions

Well Dressed & Incredibly Jen's avatar

This is, unfortunately, not new. I know if M were here she would also mention how black folk are always "looting" during an emergency but white folk are "salvaging" as an example.

Heck, going back to the Kent State masacre, the headlines would make your blood boil knowing what we know now. It took MONTHS for that to get corrected, and the press ran not walked to poll people who said those kids totally had it coming right after.

VaselineHabits's avatar

Yeah, I learned my lesson with “news” in the Great Recession (06-08). No news was pointing out the struggle, did plenty of interviews of people bitching about gas ($5/gallon) and how they had to cut out various things to AFFORD the gas prices. “Affordability” is a Democrat Hoax.

Sound familiar? Then when ONE of the major investors/companies announced they had fucked up - the rest started falling. I feel like I'm about to watch that again, maybe another Kent state, because “they” have already been justifying ICE Murders.

My favorite was when I was at a small startup (making routers) using a Content Addresssble Memory from a mid-tier Silicon Valley shop.

We were having trouble with occasionally getting the wrong answer, and I was put on the case..

You could pretty much infer the internal architecture from the way the part worked, though the vendor kept that tightly under wraps.

After a LOT of testing, I figured out what was wrong: they used a multiplexed bus internally, and they had a timing problem on the handover. Very common bug.

So.. we're on a call with them and I explain what and where I think the problem is.

Silence on the other end. Then...
