My mom passed last night. Her wife died around New Year's and she went into a fast decline in the past couple of weeks. She was 82 and I wasn't ready- I was fully prepared for her to live well into her 90s like her parents.

I'm mighty sorry to hear about your loss, Boo.

I am so sorry for your loss. Of course you weren't ready to lose your beloved mom, especially so soon after her wife passed.

Much love to you, and please let us know if there's anything we can do to help--share some stories when you feel ready.

I say it's already popped. And is already taking down the global economy.

The moment the bros groused that people were thinking about them too negatively, that was the prick that let the air out.

swmnguy's avatar

I agree with you. We're seeing the "Good Money After Bad" stage of the bubble-pop. The "sunk costs" fallacy.

This is best understood by people who drive a shitty car. You don't have enough money right now to buy a new, or newer used, car. Your shitty car needs brakes, will need a water pump/timing belt, shocks, maybe wheel bearings. It's worth maybe $5000 optimistically as a trade-in and needs more than that much in work done.

So, at what point do you throw in the towel, ditch the car, ride the bus for a time while saving up enough money to buy a better car?

If you're like me when I was Broke As A Joke, you drive the shitty car until the day it just dies on the side of the road. Then you hitch-hike home, ride the bus for a while, until you can afford a payment on a better car. Which in purely financial terms, is the wrong answer. But those are the available options if you don't have money.

This AI thing is reaching that point now.

Stop watering the fucking golf courses.

NatalyaResists's avatar

Can't argue with that.

It's a reflecting Jen!'s avatar

I was reading the other day how some AI thing either is, or wants to, hoover up some colorado river water

But nixxing golf courses would be a start. As would nixxing open air swimming pools, cash crops, and a few other water hogging things.

These FACTS are also another weapon in the "no data centers" movement. We can't eat without water. We can eat without "AI" or golf courses.

This is some really good agitprop. The AI companies can't win on the technology, so the spin is "AI forward" companies grow faster. Until they see the bill. The movement to embed "AI" so it is a permanent part of corporate America continues apace.

Heard a thing on the radio yesterday, UK people ticktoking or whatever about their visit to the USAmerica for the footing ball games. One fellow went to Texas and told his following cult or whatever they call it how hot it was. He was very funny! He was all no, you can eat the air, it is like 35 degrees!

Course then the radio people had to pause to discuss C vs F cause murrica fuck yeah. But I digress.

Course Europe is going through a wicked heat wave right now and unlike the US, everyone doesn't have AC, France especially had quite a few fatalities related to the heat :( Think as the global temps continue to rise and humanity, as a whole, does bupkiss about it, everyone is going to need AC.

Which is weird because one coworker just retired to Florida and one is thinking of moving there.
