Remember it depends a bit on barrel length and the choke. Coach guns are supposed to be good for home defense but I have no experience of my own on this. Over here Coach Guns count as having shortened barrels and as such are illegal.

Oooooo - typical NRA deceiver - can I play???

Automatic means "automatic cycle." That cycle is from cocked to cocked. It does not mean constant fire.

Some automatics only fire single shots like automatic pistols, no automatic pistol is described as semi auto.

Some automatics fire a burst the whole time the trigger is depressed but will also have a safety selector which also allows for 3 round bursts or single shot; that weapon does not stop being an automatic if the limited firing options are selected.

Liars insist there is a difference in principle between a weapon whose safety can only be set to single shot and a weapon with multiple selections for fire rate, there is not.

You will now claim that it is impossible to convert a "semi"-automatic to a fully automatic and I will point out that a Kalashnikov style can have the sear amended by a man with a file and a couple of hours to spare.

You will claim that AR-15 styles have very high tolerance engineering and I will point out that tribal gunsmiths in Pakistan and Afghanistan make these weapons using 1930's lathes and upright mills. In the USA sintered parts can be 3D printed to the necessary tolerances and CNC milling is within the range of the wealthy hobbyist or criminal.

You will claim it is far more complex than that and I will continue to laugh at you

Disclaimer: I think hunting with a rifle that's playing GI-Joe dress-up is silly. Also: Many of the guns out there that look like and would be called an AR-15 by most people are .308, which is a perfectly good hunting round, being essentially a less sudden .30-06.Also, Also: .223 works well for animals like caribou, according to the Arctic subsistence hunters I've talked to.

One explanation that might make this slightly less terrifying is that there are many U.S. military veterans amongst us, especially those of us in the red states, and when buying a rifle for any reason, be it target shooting or hunting or prepping for the revenuers, many of them choose the type of rifle they are most familiar and comfortable with, the one they received training on, the AR.
