"As of blogtime this morning, Donald Trump has not yet threatened to send the military to take over Seattle, oust its elected leaders, and maybe install an oligarch to manage the city, but he might be a little distracted at the moment, the end."

Donald should really stay out of the Soviet of Washington.

I don't understand why so many not-rich people appear to worship capitalism. Capitalism is a system where money earns more money without any work required. The fact that the money earned gets sweetheart tax deals makes the system worst.

Worker--wage earners--get to see their earned money taxed multiple times at multiple levels. Since investment income is only taxed when the investment is sold, that another biggie for the investor class. A lot of billionaires' money is never taxed at all since inheritance taxes are also sweet-hearted for them.

YAY for Seattle! I can’t understand why people would be against her platform. Don’t they hope for a better life?

Harrell was a perfectly acceptable mayor, well worthy of reelection and is replaced by a marginally acceptable activist with no governing experience. I’m in the ‘burbs so not daily affected but leftist admins in Seattle get sooooo bogged down in process that they never get shit done, other than implementing street stuff that doesn’t actually make things safer for bikes and peds but makes driving miserable.

Now we’ll have to look at those ears for four years every day in the paper.

You poor baby. You have to look at ears. So sad.

And your over-generalized comment about how leftist admins get nothing done is your opinion, not a facts. Sometimes democratic socialists get blocked by Repubs, who are extremely good at blocking stuff. My evidence for that is our current federal administration.

Not all left administrations. I was referring specifically to Seattle, which is not much influenced by the Republican zoo in the other Washington. Democratic Socialists here propose some pretty idiotic shit and of course that’s just my opinion, and then dither interminably until the next election, by which nothing has been done about housing or homelessness. Not enough actual Rs here to block a storm drain.

I’m basing my digs on the previous mayor’s success at lowering speed limits on residential streets and arteries to a crawl, implementing No Left On Red at hundreds of intersections where it is inappropriate, yet leaving pavement in disreputable disrepair. Crosstown travel is excruciating, in a city with enough algorithmic programming brainpower to sync traffic lights to halve travel time.

I am asking out of genuine curiosity, not trying to be snarky. Why do you think she won?

BTW, making fun of her appearance says more about you than her.

Tom Van Valkenburgh's avatar

She won because she seems a decent person, certainly and obviously a better human than I. Also because it’s an odd numbered year and there is a mild breeze to the left. In Seattle, those who vote every time they have the opportunity trend more activist. All good things in general but Seattle had found a reasonable balance 4 years ago and could have used some continuity.

If Ms. Wilson accomplishes any improvement in the intractable housing and homelessness situations she’ll deserve reelection and fireworks. I hope she has a thick skin and wish her nothing but success.

Sounds like what we need is less "Democrats" and more "Social-Democrats"

I live in West Seattle, home of Dow Constantine, Frances Farmer and Bob Grieve (great guy!). I voted for Katie because I'm a socialist, but when the early returns showed Harrell winning, I figured I could handle it. Now I'm very happy. Bruce will be ok. But all us commie, hippy freaks will definitely get behind Katie and help.

BTW, basic cost of living in Seattle is estimated at $70k per year. That translates to $35/hr wage.

Sorry, but I'm not celebrating. She's an East Coast child of privilege who arrived in Seattle after dropping out of Oxford who doesn't know the first thing about operating a city government. She didn't beat some MAGA politican. Bruce Harrell, whose father was black, grew up in Seattle's Central District in a poor family. He was getting things done. This will set progress on everything from homelessness to crime back significantly. Being progressive doesn't necessarily make you capable of managing a complex bureaucracy.

Given the corruption of our current government, not being part of it could be a huge plus.

I like her community activism, especially on public transportation. But I'll wait for some results as mayor, while keeping my fingers crossed she surprises me.

That makes good sense. Pragmatism works better than purity in politics; it is not a pure profession, but you want your politician to be able to beat others. The trend against whatever-the-heck the Repub party is not seems to be on the increase, which could help a lot.

For now all of us need to keep our fingers crossed while trumpy is still in office.

How appalling! She had to borrow money from her parents? Can't socialists just be oligarchs with their own money which they've looted from all the mommy & daddies on the planet? That is so much seemlier.

Harrell took an early lead; election night it was assumed he would win; but as the count progressed, suddenly midweek whoops! the numbers flipped and stayed flipped. The winning racecar pulled ahead only in the final eighth of a lap…
