No, I never served in combat and I thank God every day that I was spared that horror. Anyone who speaks of war in terms of "glory" has either never been there, a moron, or a raging psychopath.
Every combat veteran I have ever known has expressed that sentiment to me. I once asked a good friend, a Vietnam Vet, who had definitely been "in the shit" why never attended any veterans functions. He said, " I'll answer that question, but never ask me it again. Look, i've spent 30 years trying to forget the things I had to do, the things I had to see , the sounds and smells I had to endure, I have no desire whatever to go to some place and talk about any of it or be reminded in any way""
I did indeed never ask again, but will carry his words to my grave.
