There is still a considerable chunk of the population, I’d say 30-35% based on polls and voter turnout statistics, who want this scorched earth, vendetta-driven, iron fist style of angry governance. That means we need an unprecedented turnout next year and in 2028. Because with the GOP election fuckery, we can’t expect to win a close race. As depicted in Gangs of New York, “Monk (the Irishman running for Sheriff to bring fairness and equality to the city) has already won by 3,000 more votes than there are voters!” “Keep counting, we don’t need a victory, we need a Roman triumph.” So too do we need to win by Biden-esque 7-8 million margin, at least, and to take the swing states.
Will this dark turn toward cruelty and corruption be motivation enough for voters to take democracy back? It’s unclear. Based on how badly they turned out and failed to prevent this in 2024, I’m not optimistic. If America sees this first year and says “more, please, Sir,” then that’s the way it is, and people want vindictive, cruel people like Miller making decisions that shape our country.
