That's not really retribution, then, is it?

That's just plain old fascist brutality.

They set it up that way on purpose.

Those psych evaluations are skewed to promote obedience to authority, however unearned the latter, and not prudent independent judgment.

There are people I know who have FAILED the psych eval & IQ tests for the Academy because they have scored TOO HIGH on intelligence -- because the brownshirts-in-charge's guiding assumptions are that "too high" an intelligence promotes questioning of authority.

It's like that.

This, unsettlingly, is how that works

Actually, it was the other way round, in a way. The people who ended up sitting behing hime were TOLD to wear the masks so it would look like Trump was obeying the rules. And in fact they were NOT wearing the masks until Trump came out. It was all for show, nothing more.

"because he wasn't called on it.'

Part of that problem is who he was talking to -- a Murdoch-run Faux Noise puppet is not going to call him on his crap -- but IMO one of the worse problems with the snarl that's so-called "modern journalistic ethics" when they're covering wanna-be authoritarianism instead of two sides of a democracy is that no OTHER NETWORKS called THAT REPORTER on failing to do her Constitutionally-protected job.

man that'd be awesome if american justice worked like that and this guy never saw a job as a LEO again. such idealism. brings a tear to my eye.

my bet is he has another job by the end of the month, and the sheriff who hires him will say something like, "now we know what you said was true, son, but you can't say that when you're being filmed, understand?"

Speaking for the "rich white dude in a Mercedes" contingent, these people scare the shit out of me when I venture out of my safe cocoon in the northeast.

He was put on ‘leave’. Otherwise known as paid vacation. I certainly hope his career is over but he’ll probably get hired in another county or state. I guess ther might be a group that labels itself “Antifa” and that they might vomit illegal acts but I’ve never met one. I myself am opposed to fascism. It’s an authoritarian political system such as Hitler’s and Benito Mussolini (not sure about spelling). If you are pro fascism you are not at all in favor of the US Constitution.

a week without pay for any cop returning after their shift without a complete record . . . if violence happened and is not on the record immediate firing . . . second offense pn-the-spot firing.

I don't know how this works in police union contracts, but everywhere I have worked, starting with the military and going on through civilian life forever (now retired), paid vacation is not totally free. You only earn so much a lear, you may be lucky enough to be able to cash it out when you leave the job (not everyone is), but if you are, being placed on it for cause will reduce your settlment unless you can continue to work long enough to build it back up again.. And there is a maximum cutoff for how much paid vacation you can have at any one time.

Even cops are entitled to due process. It's not possible to actuallypunish them wthout convicting them first. Not appropriately.

And that if probably true. And even more likely true if he's willing to cross the Cascades.
