Because the person watches the advert and thinks they *might* have something, lets say restless leg syndrome.

So they go to their doctor. The doctor says you might have it lets try this drug, that the doctor gets money from the pharmacy company to put people on.

The insurance company /medicare people allow it.

BIll Maher is an ass, but he brilliantly observed, "That's not a doctor, that's a dealer."

It was used by the DoD sure, but I would like to know who paid for its invention and development. Was it the patent holder Survival Technologies Inc or was the development paid for by taxpayer money and then allowed to be privatized... like so many other things.

The thing is that even the pittance that drug companies spend in research isn't spent efficiently or scientifically. The goal of the research is not understanding the illness, but rather in profiting from it. So rather than studying the entire immune system and developing cures for auto-immune diseases in the process, they are developing immune-suppressing drugs that may (or may not) provide relief of symptoms and generate a stream of income over the life of the patient.

Medical science the way it is practiced in this country is not science. Don't be fooled by expensive imitations.

Sawbones did an episode on this recently. It blows my mind that it happens! As a notamerican in notamerica, I’ve only ever seen ads for otc medicine. And I don’t remember it at all as a kid- google is not helping me find out when this became an option in the UK.

Fucking hell! How do you cope?

I think my dad is on the same or similar medicines to you, based on your other post. Coz he’s over 65, his prescriptions are free. Mine are £9.35 each in the UK, with contraceptives free. In qatar, it’s all subsidised, but range from 2QAR to 17QAR. Which is about 55cents to 4USD50

Anyone who took Big Pharma's word should be very ashamed of themselves. It is beyond crystal clear that we in the US are being played and it needs to stop. All of the medical robbery needs to stop.

Get our drugs from Canada? That's a way of saying "We've got nothing but band-aids and soothing empty words. So get your medicines from a country that has free health care instead of just imitating Canada and instituting health care."

My work involves coordinating very expensive high-end corporate meetings and events. I've made a lot of money doing Pharma events.

If I were a fascist or a "moderate," that would be all the reason I'd need to support Pharma and do everything possible to keep things exactly the way they are, except more so. This is the position of a number of the more-corrupted unions.

But I haven't always had privilege, and I do have values. I also have what none of the Pharma apologists have: Enough.

So I support public health, which is incompatible with profit, by definition.

All big pharma companies , and big weapons manufacturers have detailed annual budgets with profit and loss statements, which include cap-ex. Which is how much and where they spend those profits. The very most profitable category (return on investment), of that spending is LOBBYing. They have completely captured both political parties with that lobbying. (Bribery). Joe Manchin ain’t the only professional liar in the senate. And the wheels on the taxpayers bus go round and round.

It's long past time to take away tax breaks from corporations. They should have to prove they actually spend money on R & D to get a break, if not, no tax break for you.
