They had a computer thrash through the selections, and come up with the schedule that generated the fewest conflicts. I never had one - although I did have an annoying number of early morning lectures (and, once, a day with 6 consecutive classes.)

I took a course once in college where I was the only guy in a class of 20. It was Advanced Oral French. Believe me, the title of the course promised far more than it delivered. I should have sued.
