september 10th, you say? it might just be the day i had a major argument with the supervisor of the small spanish grocery retail "chain" i work for. on one of her rare visits to our store, she decided that we didn't need to have a stool available behind the counter and took it away.
now, all of us do our jobs with dedication, stocking shelves, advising customers, making coffee and sandwiches, cutting cheese, ringing up purchases--basically running around, 8 hours a day, for a decent but not great salary. but that's not enough for her. we need to not be able to share one stool between 5 or 6 people, for a few minutes at a time while entering or checking out a purchase order on the store computer.
i lost my legendary chill and blew up at her, saying that measure was punitive and disrespectful and we need to not work like it's the 50s. i lost the battle and in the end, i only made myself look and feel bad because i let my anger boil over and spill out unprofessionally, but boy, i still feel it every time i look at the place the stool used to be.
Does anyone else find the "accent" used by Bryan Jordan Alvarez in the original version kinda, I dunno, problematic? It reminds me of Apu from the Simpsons or, Crom forbid, Jar-Jar Binks. It's not some sort of audio-accent-filter, is it? Do they even have those?
Having worked retail somewhere that required cashiers to have doctor’s notes in order to sit down at the register, I must agree that sometimes just sitting down is an act of revolution.
For those of you who don't do TikTok, I posted the video of "Sitting" to my substack. It, of course, includes a theatrically lavish hat-tip to the inimitable Ms. Benincasa for ONCE AGAIN bringing some unique joy to our lives.
''paen to rest on TikTok, Instagram, Spotify and/or Apple Music.''
NONE of which I would ever go to, and from the looks of this and it's description it is more about being infuencers*, which is one of the absolute worst trends today, and the genereally horrible''music'' that often goes with it. extreme fail on all levels here.
*meanwhile those of us who are intelliegent are more concerned whether we will have a fascist state if Trump somehow becomes president. Pretty sure few influencers are concerned about that in their narcissism.
Brian is a fairly well-respected and accomplished actor and writer, but I understand a lack of interest in his work. I am glad for those of you who are...intelligent. :)
You have to remember that witrh automation we only need a small percentage of the population to create all the products and services we need. These influencers seem like they're wasting their time being useless, but that's because they are. We've made work obsolete. We tried filling the gap with meaningless jobs emailing and meeting all day, we've created a shitton of jobs that apply the red queen's adage (you have to run as hard as you can just to keep up!) to marketing, effectively wasting all those hours on more and more expensive competition that doesn't add any value. They've become influencers because it is one of the few ways to make money that doesn't crush your soul.
Of course this is all because automation costs people their jobs, when that isn't the only possible result, that was a choice we made. We decided that firing people was a better use of the benefits than anything else.
Quick summary:
Automation saves work/money/materials/something, i.e. it increases profit.
You can use this in five ways:
1. Pay the stockholders more: Help the stockholders.
2. Pay the workers more: Help your employees.
3. Pay for more/better equipment: Grow the business income.
4. Reduce the business costs: Fire workers.
5. Reduce the length of the workweek: Help your employees.
The stockholders are the deciders so they choose themselves.
- The short-term thinkers with ethics choose 1.
- The long-term thinkers with ethics choose a balance between 1 and 3.
Thank you, @sarajbenincasa, for introducing me to Alvarez and TJMack and associates. I follow a number of exvangelicals and other badasses from Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, etc, and I noticed that I'm already following a number of folks who follow these folks, so I am clearly late to this party. But this is why we pay Wonkette the steady bucks, to have things brought to our attention when our other friends have failed us.
Good lord, I'm late to the party here, but we do not attack our writers like this. There's some real thin skinned bullshit happening in the comments. I don't enjoy Indian food, but I don't walk into Indian restaurants loudly announcing how much I don't like them; I just don't go in them. God forbid a writer here doesn't show proper deference to the comment section. Get over yourselves.
Ah, those were the days - weekends when Newell would wake up with a hangover, not like that a conversation had strayed off topic in a thread... then banhammer EVERYONE in the thread and make us create new logins (and lose all our pee points!!!!).
Fine, I will just be an old and cranky high school sped teacher, but I have no respect for my colleagues who deliver a lesson, get the kids working at their desks, and then plop down behind their own desks for the rest of the period.
That's the Prussian method, I guess, but I learned my chops from sheepdogs.
I did, and I deeply apologize for being rude. It was late, I was drunk and in a cranky mood. It was totally uncalled for. Again, my deepest apologies, Ms. Benincasa.
That's okay. I've been sober for almost five years but let me tell you about some of the wild shit I said in my drankin days...HOO BOY. (And to be honest, sometimes I wasn't one bit inebriated when I got wild!) I appreciate you, you're fuckin cool with me.
You’re a kind person. It happens! And it takes a lot to apologize. It is something I am working on these days in my own life. You’ve made a fan out of me, monsieur.
Presuming that Trump cannot run for president in 2024 for various reasons, and looking at the Republicans who are also running in the primary who are not gaining any traction with voters, is Kevin McCarthy a viable alternative to Trump in this election cycle?

You are a sweetheart, thank you.
Well I love this song and have been a longtime fan of TJ Mack... gonna do what he would do and ignore the hateration in this dancerie
TJ is an international pop star, so he is accustomed to such commentary. A king, really.
And *I* love your screen name! It's positively Dahl-ing!
Why thank you!

oh Sara, you had me at Cafe Bustelo...
It is the best drugs ever.
Some of y'all do not read Brittlestar, and it shows.

And it happens to all of us."
hahahahah
Thanks for the tip, though for some reason you've decided to be as abrasive as possible when giving it.
I'll give Brittlestar a try. Thanks!
I would wager the majority of people here do not read Brittlestar, nor do they care.

We all need to seize every opportunity to lift up the Nap Ministry! ICYMI, there's an excellent interview with the Bishop here: https://prismreports.org/2020/09/03/qa-nap-ministrys-tricia-hersey-talks-rest-and-racial-justice/
Get comfy, Wonkers -- dial 1-833-LUV-NAPS (588-6277) -- let your eyes close -- and RESIST.
Thank you, honey. The Nap Ministry is fucking awesome. She does incredible work.
must not be much happening in the world today, we're fighting each other ..
😟

Thank you, very very much.
I genuinely can't believe this happened here. I'm very sorry.
Bring back the banhammer!
I'd settle for basic decency.
I’d settle for STFU and move on if they don’t like it.

Sorry some people are being mean. I liked your post. The song was weird but I'm down with the message.
Thank you honey. I appreciate that. And the song IS so so weird.
I do not catch any of these references.
That name also means nothing to me
I don't suppose you could find a link that didn't want my fucking personal information. Fuck you and every social influencer.
Did you just say "fuck you" to one of our writers? Seriously?! That's wildly shitty behavior.
I did, and I deeply apologize for being rude. It was late, I was drunk and in a cranky mood. It was totally uncalled for. Again, my deepest apologies, Ms. Benincasa.

Among Republican voters he is currently polling at negative two percent
OK, so better than expected.
