They were supposed to just create some incidental electronic sounds for a few scenes, but test audiences were so blown away that they were given the job of doing the entire movie - and their work gets universal acclaim to this day. But since they weren't members of the Composers' Union, they had to get listed in the credits as "Electronic Tonalities by Louis and Bebe Barron". And because it didn't say "Music By..." or "Original Score By...", they were completely left out by the Academy.
The also need a category for "Most Oustanding Stunt Work", but that's another rant.
