IMHO, Carl Paladino is why Kathy Hochul is governor of New York today. When Andrew Cuomo first ran, Paladino was his opponent. Paladino swept Erie and Niagara counties, traditionally Democratic strongholds. Cuomo seemed to take this as a personal insult: he started pouring state money into Western New York to revitalize the local economy, and picked a running mate from the area in 2014. She's the first governor from the Buffalo area since Grover Cleveland.

September 11th 2001 was a gorgeous summer day. The wind was blowing from the west, and the toxic cloud of dust reached all the way to The Rockaways. I knew my late mother did not remember her Manhattan geography although she was born here, so I couldn't leave home until I had reached her by phone to let her know we were unharmed. That took hours. I had to carry photo ID to get below 14th Street. When the wind shifted, that horrid smoke came here.
What was Giuliani doing? He was running around with the police and fire chiefs for photo ops. Police officers and firemen in the towers could NOT speak to each other by radio, because that scumbag gave the contract to a crony. He had been advised to put his command center in Brooklyn because of the prior attempt to bring down the twin towers (the van bomb), but insisted it be at 7 WTC because his mistress lived nearby in Battery Park City. Unforgivable.
