Read the actual article's last paragraph carefully. He will most likely serve 10 years in Juvenile and then be free. "But that sentence—the same as what an adult would receive—is a technicality. Joseph will spend at least the next seven years in a state juvenile facility, where he will be the youngest inmate. When he is 20, he will be eligible for a hearing that could initiate parole proceedings, and—potentially—he will then win his freedom and rejoin society. At most, barring any future legal maneuvering, he'll serve ten more years." Sorry for no footnotes.

This one is good, though. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watc..." target="_blank">" rel="nofollow noopener" title="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73tjF0bzAi4">http://www.youtube.com/watc...

No disrespect intended but did you actually read the article? The kid definitely needs more help then your average foster home could provide. He appears to be doing better in school and over all in the structured environment. California juvey isn't Rikers Island.

The whole thing is a clusterfuck obviously but it sounds like he has a reasonable chance of getting some of the help he needs. He isn't doing 40 years he will be out at latest when he turns 23. Again, its not ideal but not quite as bad as the editor's preview made it sound.

Yes, I do think that you misread it. He was 10 when this happened but now is 13 or close to it. The article gave two possible release scenario's 1. at age 20 via parole. 2. at age 23 which would be the maximum allowed for a juvenile. If he is released at 23 that would be 10 years from the sentencing. In your defense GQ could have explained it better but the bottom line is that since he was tried and sentenced as a juvenile the longest sentence that they can give him is until he is 23. I suspect that the judge put in the 40 year window dressing to look tough for the law and order crowd but in fact he will get out at 23.

Pretty much agree with our Fearless Leader. I have had no problems using either one, but it was much easier to create an account on Disqus. A nice extra is that after going on the D I was surprised to discover that I was logged onto commenting sections on other sites as well, sites that I have never posted on (and even sites that I had never visited before). Disqus seems to have decent reach in the wonkosphere.

Yup, you betcha. I was about to post essentially the same comment. A bit lighter and more breezy in tone than this TerribleSite but every bit as sharp and funny. With a focus on arts, entertainment, lifestyles and misc. real life stuff, it's a nice break from the Gawd 'N Poly-TICKS subject matter here. Love 'em both, 'cause it's nice to have a little variety in one's addictions.

I just wish I saw more of Youze Peeplez over there.

P.S., I REALLY need that Twinkie Maker <em>(hint, hint).</em>
