Pretty sure for kids that everything is free. Because you're a kid. In school. You get free food at home too. Because you don't have a job yet. Because you're 8.

“One of the things that kills me…”I certainly wouldn’t want one of the things that “kills” her to actually kill her. Whatever happens to actually kill her, it won’t be compassion or critical thinking.

No one questions the need to feed prisoners for free. They're forced to be there and they can't pay for it, so the state provides them with food for free.

Schoolchildren, likewise, have to be there and don't have jobs. And like most humans, kids need also need to eat every so often. Why on earth are we even questioning the need to provide them food without a charge?

Same old same old, indeed. The Southern Strategy.

Even Maggie Thatcher only stole our milk.

When you're out-ghouling Thatcher you need to have a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror (assuming you cast a reflection).

How are kids gonna learn that life sucks and sometimes you’ve gotta go hungry with this sort of terrible free-lunch-for-kids program? Heeeng?

I believe this is because, when free lunch is only for the poor, some kids would rather go hungry than admit they need free lunch.

Having worked in the schools I will tell you right now it is cheaper and faster to provide free lunch for every kid than to manage some kids paying, some kids free, or even some kids free, some kids bring a lunch. If it’s free to everyone, no one has to manage the deposits of money into accounts or develop systems to tell people their kid’s account is out of $. No one has to pay for crappy software to manage student money accounts. No one has to spend time with little cards to say what you paid for and whether you want lunch or milk. That is one entire management job districtwide that they can skip, and 1/5 of a Secretary per building that they can use for something else, and 5 minutes a day back to the classroom because no one has to take a count of lunches. They just order enough lunches for everyone to have one, too, no guessing how many kids will opt in on pizza day. The districtwide salary alone is probably enough to pay for most of the lunches but the state or the federal government covers the food costs.

And behavior improves when everyone is fed. And learning improves. And parents get to spend less time buying crap in chip bags and creating vast amounts of plastic waste, and more time reminding their kid to brush her teeth before school.

Everything is better with group-paid lunch.

As far as I know, when I was a kid in rural OH, our school lunches were free. We might've had to buy lunch in HS, I dunno, since I never ate lunch then. But I'm pretty sure if my folks were being billed for school lunches when I was in grade school, I would've picked up on that at some point. I think I kinda recall maybe bringing lunch to school in jr. high. We might also have had to bring money for milk in the afternoons in grade school. Not clear on that memory. Long time ago.

So I'm left wondering when this became an issue at all, anywhere? I'm totally ignorant about this.

I'm confused. When I was in elementary school, we all got free lunch. My favorite was Hamburger Surprise. We could bring lunch if we wanted to, but it was always there, along with the nice cafeteria ladies in their hairnets. We also got free graham crackers and milk in kindergarten. I drew no conclusions about the world at large from this.
