Years ago AFSCME came in to organize municipal workers in several Chicago suburbs, where I was working at the city skating rink at the time. The village sent people who lied about what unions do (I set them straight) and then more or less threatened the jobs of anyone who met with union organizers, even on our own time. (Eventually the union threw part time workers like me under the bus in order to get full time workers on the contract. Then the city changed as many as the could of the now-unionized full time jobs to non-union part time. They're all fucking evil)

I had an argument over teacher's unions with a relative. WI basically destroyed teachers unions in all but name only. Teachers salaries went "up" because they weren't paying union dues anymore. I tried to point out that now they couldn't advocate for better healthcare, smaller class sizes, and building maintenance. And that being able to do so had monetary value. So yeah, unions cost you money but in the long run its usually worth it.

Starbucks being the Wal-Mart of coffee has what, exactly, to do with the workers unionizing for their own betterment?

Nothing at all. I pointed out that I was a proud union member, but I am sad that a vile company like Starbucks is involved. If I was rich I would fund a new place that did not take advantage of the workers, who WOULD be allowed to unionise and it would definitely have better coffee and not use faux hipster names like Grande and Venti.

yet, people still vote against their own interest because listening to propaganda provides, for the lack of a better term, a safe space of sorts.
