California DMV is reasonably efficient and pleasant to deal with. Most things can be done online. I encourage people to be respectful toward the people at the DMV. It's a cheap shot to complain about a necessary bureaucracy.
The problelm with DMVs or any public facing office is that there are never enough staff so lines form and just get longer and longer. Conducting business on-line helps a lot with license plate renewals and such. Michigan also has some kiosks in places like grocery stores where you do your business. My renewed my driver's license at one such place. Took me longer to figure out how to use it than it did to get the license renewed. That was nice.
I’m with Trix on this. I’m ok with the DMV for the most part. Now and then it can be a PITA, but that’s usually when I’ve left something til the last minute and have to go at a bad time. Also, the kiosks are great for anything you don’t need to talk to someone for. And they even put them in supermarkets in a few places. Convenient. Anyway, yeah, I don’t want some republican shithead to dismantle it and put something awful in its place.

Back in the day it was truly hellish, though. Here in Sac, they used to have a secret DMV office for state officials and employees. Anyone could use it, IF they knew it existed and where it was. There were no lines and no windows to bounce back and forth between, just a couple of clerks who would do everything you needed while you sat comfortably, usually without a wait. When I first learned about it, it was located in a nondescript office on the bridge between two 1940's vintage DWR buildings on P Street, but they moved it every couple of years, to keep it's location from becoming widely known.
