When I see "Steve Rogers" and "Canada" together, there's only one person I think of:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Rogers_(baseball)

Still breaks my heart that he gave up that home run to Rick Monday in the final game of the 1981 NL Championship Series. Maybe there would still be a Montréal Expos to root for.

Canada here. We're actually fine with the US building a wall to, uh, protect them from us, yeah, that's it.

So nice of Lt. Rogers to stop just short of rattling the sabers. Could he actually be self-aware enough to understand that Canada's a member of NATO and what happens when one of those countries gets invaded?

The MAGAts don't get that the ''NATO'' name means North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, but likely think it's Not America Terrorists Organisation.

I'm reasonably sure it was supposed to convey a sense of depth and perspective as with the vanishing point* BUT if the supposedly parallel lines that originate at the eyes diverge to a separation clearly wider than the human head, the illusion of parallel lines is greatly diminished. Yeah, Cadet Bonespurs is rockin' some serious strabismus there.

Universal health care?

Expand full comment
Mark L's avatar

Universal Health Care, contrary to what most people in the US think, it is NOT FREE. We pay high taxes that goes into supplementing the Health Care System in Canada. There are benefits and drawbacks, Covid decimated our health care system, and it has not recovered.

That's another conversation all together.

They get their panties all in a bunch over sane public health measures such as vaccines which defy Dog's Will and their Constitutional right to never be disagreed with. And there's that obsession with China again, which never fails to prove a loser. Remember how Sith Lord Cheney and his front man Dubya were too invested in PNAC's plans for thwarting the villainous designs of Beijing to pay any attention to the warnings about Bin Laden? Letting politics override intelligence always leads to disaster. Trudeau's moderate social-democratic policies bear the same resemblance to Xi's policies that Donald the Demented bears to Superman- both are featherless bipeds who live on North America., PERIOD. Surprising that they haven't dragged History's Greatest Monster Dr. Fauci into this inane kerfuffle yet.

As did my Mom , who passed away from ovarian cancer, eighteen months ago. The care that she got was incredible, generous, and HUMANE. Was treated with the utmost dignity.

That is why I mentioned that was a different conversation all together.

Health care expenditures in 2022: Canada, 6.1k; USA, 13.4k. You pay the govt and we pay insurance companies (executives) HMOs (bureaucrats), hospital monopolies (Bill Frist) and a bit left over to pay actual providers. Also, dental care is "extra" for Usanians. Your system will recover because your govt also funds education. The system in the US is to import skilled workers. But MAGA is gonna fix that. No fucking commie furriners in Murica! USA! USA! USA!

agony's avatar

Dental care is extra for us, too. As are prescriptions.

I'm a senior now, so I no longer have to pay for my prescription insurance and a get a couple thousand bucks a year that I can spend on dental. Before I hit 65 I had some insurance. About $450 a year, which gave me very small dental coverage, and all my meds were capped at a cost to me of at most $25 for a three month supply. All other medical care covered by the system.

I ran into some health issues last fall, and in the space of two months had six in person doctor visits, two phone consultations, one emergency room stint, three blood workups, two EKGs, one electrocardiogram, one CT scan, and had myself hooked up to heart monitors for one night. No cost to me except parking.

Our system has some flaws, and the current UCP government in Alberta is determined to introduce more (because how can you make the argument that socialized medicine doesn't work if you don't break it first?) but nobody here is ever worried that they can't afford to go to the doctor.

Michael, that is your system, I will not comment on what's better or worse.

There are pros and cons to both systems. I believe that there are philosophical differences, a different mindset between the countries. Not enormous differences, but the differences help shape what is different between the two countries.

That is the health system in the US.

Sorry, You have to make the best of the situation.

I am not in favour of the US System of healthcare, that is your reality, like it or not.

Europe has its "systems" Australia and New Zealand also have health care.

If the citizens in the US demanded health care , they would force the government's hand. But they are not,the question is why. Do American's see and hear so many horror stories about socialised medicine that it causes them to "shudder" perish the thought?

So we've been stuck in the house since the 11th, because the yard/walkway is so icy that we can't get to the car, let alone the street, right?

So, DH takes a shower and comes downstairs in sweatpants and a flannel shirt, and goes, "I was starting to feel a little gamy."

So I was like, "I didn't notice anything."

So he's like, "Are you kidding? I stink like Trump in a restaurant!"

The only thing that is truly wrong about Communism is that it doesn't work. That's because human beings are greedy, selfish and competitive. The only places where it even appeared to work was in in underdeveloped countries with endemic poverty, and even in those places it didn't work for very long without coercion because human beings are greedy, selfish and competitive.

Every time I think about this I think of the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy" which is one of the most original and thought-provoking movies ever made.

In fairness, it should be pointed out that it ALSO didn't work because Capitalism shoves a wrench in every upstart country that tries it.

I suppose it *could* work, in a small enough community where everyone knows everyone else and it's easy to adjust the "each according to his abilities, each according to his needs" thing. When you need the apparatus of A State to run things is where it goes off the rails.
