I did a little research before I made my appointment. Found out Tues, Wed, Thurs early afternoons are best times to go (even better when you have an appointment).
Yeah me too, AAA member and renew through the mail. But to obtain a Real ID you have to go to a field office. I called several AAA offices. Unless someone gave me the wrong info, AAA does not process Real ID applications.
Yeah, they are running about 6 weeks out though (maybe longer since my visit in June and with this Real ID stuff). There was some guy that came in frothing at the mouth at the front desk person when she told him there was a 3-4 hour wait. He told her this was the last day he could renew his commercial license, otherwise he'd lose his job and he had to be to work in 2 hours and what was she going to do about it?
I went to the Placerville field office where all the white repubs live. Pretty crowded in there too, fairly clean, but it's very small and the parking lot has maybe 25 spaces total. Looks like an old house converted to a DMV.
The real ID thing was a pain in the ass for me, in that I had to order a new certified marriage cert, as we had misplaced our original. Took 4 weeks to get by mail. Had to show utility bill (for proof of address), SS card and the marriage cert (because my name had changed when I got married). Also brought along a mortgage statement just in case they demanded more proof. The worker and her boss scrutinized and poured over my documents for a good 15 minutes, glared at me a few times, whispered and muttered a few sentences to one another and then stamped my approval. Then it was onto picture taking and I was done.
I went there expecting the worst and I was pleasantly surprised that I finished my transaction in 1-1/2 hours and the line was not even wrapped around the building (as other people I've known have had that bad experience).
I saw a clip on the local news showing Cox in the DMV office. I thought, "What a moron." I recently had to renew my license (I had used up my quota of renewals by mail). So I figured I'd make an appointment and get my "Real ID" taken care of too. The appointments are about 6 weeks out, but they totally make a difference in your wait time. I got to the DMV 1/2 hour early because I was worried I wouldn't find a parking spot, but the parking lot gods were smiling upon me that day. Went in anyway, even though 1/2 hour early, and my total time spent in there (even with the painful hassle of the Real ID paperwork scrutiny) was about 1-1/2 hours. And, yes, I even got a hideous new picture to go with it. The last time I had been in the DMV, the lady was nice enough to allow retakes. This worker was Atilla the Hun and no retakes.
actually, the by-mail thing is new, and something i didnt expect because of the new DHS real ID laws--and believe it or not IL has alwys been fairly efficient with their DMVs, but esp so in the last 15-20 yrs
This has become a problem because the federal government is ordering that a drivers license will soon no longer be enough identification for air travel, even domestic air travel. The DMV announced the creation of a "Real ID" card to comply with this bullshit. Although most drivers license renewals are done by mail, this new card requires that you come to a DMV office in person with your birth certificate, SS number, and proof of residency. This has created the bottleneck. Trump paranoia kicking Cali's ass. Your turn soon.

or Planned Parenthood. That's their other "go to."
That's socialism! That's communism! That's unpatriotic and unAmerican! /s

It would also be nice if they would allow AAA to do the Real ID for their members. That would take some of the load off the field offices.

Is Devin Nunes' career dying soon?
It sounds like he spent some time at a trump rally.
