Turns out the state Senate couldn't be assed to pass a bill to back up the deal Gov. Jim Justice offered (a five percent pay raise for teachers and school support staff, as well as raises for other state workers).

Property taxes are the only low taxes in the state. Our state tax on gas is high. We have to pay personal property taxes (automobiles, recreational vehicles, boats, etc.). We even have a $3.00 tax for each dog owned.
Here in Australia we pay our teachers reasonably well and it could be better. They are university educated so they deserve it. So here's your chance teachers in WV they are always saying we are short of teachers.
West Virginia is the fourth wealthiest state in natural resources, but our people are poor because the wealth is allowed to flow out-of-state. Many of our politicians are bought by energy lobbyists, among others. It is sad to see the amount of corruption. West Virginia operates more like a colony than a state. Personally, I feel that we are headed towards a legislative special session because we have embarrassed GOP leaders. They are going to wrap any pay or PEIA fix around gas/drilling bills that have been written by lobbyists, and teachers will be blamed for all of it
The ACLU of WV recently tweeted that the WV Dept of Education is trying to stop the teachers from speaking out on social media. They are, obviously, on it. But I'd ask any- & everybody to please go to the ACLU-WV account & RT them. This is a hard fight, & they need support. Many thanks.
A gentleman at Canaan Valley State Park once remarked where ever he goes people will sing the refrain when they find out he is from WV. It's been my experience he was correct. Istanbul, 2008-right after Mr Obama was sworn in-we are in the giant covered Market and I must have heard about 5 or 6 renditions that day. Paris, check. Malta, ditto. Lille, mais oui! It's amazing.
