Last week, we learned that the Great Depression was caused by government regulation of free enterprise, and that while it was a tad uncomfortable for some, there was no need for any government interference in the wonderful job that private charities were doing to help people.

The real problem with Zinn is that he's all interpretation, not facts. For a student with no background in the names and dates, they are lost. When I was a student teacher, way back in the mists of time, my associate teacher used Zinn as the only text in his US history class- and this is in Canada, where the students would have had no previous exposure to US history. I spent most of my time there creating additional materials, like timelines, so the kids would know what Zinn was actually talking about. The teacher thanked me profusely and said he would use those materials from then on- which begs the question, why hadn't he done so himself?
Don't standardized tests get marked by some agency outside the school? I know in Ontario the gr 10 literacy test gets marked anonymously in Toronto.
